Ello friends – so I’ve been a hermit for a fair while because I’ve spent the last six(ish) months with my pal Ed building a recording studio just outside Folkestone that ticks all of my boxes – or at least MOST of my boxes (I’d really love a million pounds and a massive chapel to work with, but this is a pretty good start) 😁

Having done a fair bit of bedroom producing as well as a lot of recording-in-other-people’s-studios producing, I wanted to create a space that works for how I like to work – a comfortable, acoustically lovely space with everything set up so that we can hit the ground running at any point and get really beautiful records.

Heyhey friends! I’ve recently wrapped up a few big projects and am looking to book more in 🕺

If you’re looking for recording/production, mixing, or mastering, let’s chat! (And if you know someone that’s looking to get their songs down, I’d appreciate you sending them my way 😁)

I’m comfortable with everything from trad folk to raucous indie rock – and can help with adding guitars, keys, bass, percussion, backing vocals, & more as well as string & orchestral arrangements (whatever we feel the song needs!). Recording can be at my home studio in Folkestone for solo/duo acoustic stuff or, more comfortably, at a suitable studio somewhere in Kent (depending on budget & needs) – & I’m happy to travel for larger projects ☺️

I was meaning to post this weeks ago but then got busy as a bean – but here’s the *much anticipated* follow-up to my phase video!

If you’re listening on a phone, the difference here is relatively subtle, but that’s largely also because phase problems in recordings are minimised a bunch when you’ve installed proper room treatment (i.e. the room then doesn’t create more problems that amplify the mic placement mistakes).

Crucially, whatever problems you’ve got really start to add up once you start processing your signals – these recordings are entirely unprocessed (other than probably some EQ from the console).

The TL;dr here is that phase problems get very screwy with your productions, so you end up having to spend ages cutting and boosting and controlling stuff that’s only sorta “in between” the recordings – highly spooky… and with us being so close to Halloween, I’d recommend avoiding spooky things!

“Phase” is something that tends to make the rounds on the YouTube guru content mill as something you should be terrified of – and often of course without much of an explanation of what and why – so I’m making a few videos on just that!

The short of it is that phase cancellation happens most obviously when you’re multi-mic recording stuff without attention to mic placement, and it can end up making everything you’ve recorded thin and indistinct. This first video’s about why phase cancellation happens in the first place!

If you’re an artist/producer missing space and depth in your tracks, you’re likely relying too much on single-mic recordings that then require you to use plugins to achieve a sense of space.

Stereo recording’s what helps you get that extra step in an organic way – but you then need to keep phase coherence in mind!

I thought I’d start a series of musical rambles – mostly as an excuse to hear my own voice…

In this first instalment, I explore what the role of a decent mixing engineer is in a production. The tl;dr is that it’s a creative partner as much as it’s a technical role. Like an extra member of your band, good mixing builds on your hard work and takes it to the next level – helping to eke out as much punch, movement, and emotional impact throughout the song.

I got married a few weeks ago and the wedding & honeymoon were a dream. Usually there’s a “crash back to reality” here but, luckily, my crash has been getting back into the studio working on some new projects (a Christmas song with @nicklawrencemusic and continuing to work on an EP with @almahata__) and generally pottering around the studio neatening up. Which has been pretty lovely too! After 6ish months of building work, it’s been great to get back into the swing of being creative, if a little rustily!

So, with all that niceness, here’s a quick, live, mopey song – I wrote this one last year in a bit of a slump, but it’s pretty and I’ll likely record it properly and put it on the next Lorel album. Bon appétit!

So last Saturday I only went and tied the knot, jumped the broom, got hitched, and ball-and-chained-ha-ha to the love of my life – Rosie (now) MOULOS!

By golly, what a beauty, eh!? ❤️

We DIY’d a heckofalot of the wedding and, in all that hullaballoo, I ran out of time to write a worthwhile speech – so I thought I’d write some soppy words here ❤️

Rosie and I, by the end of this year, will have been together for 8 years – which is a mini-forever in that it’s about a quarter of my life but also it was always forever anyway. It was wild to meet someone I was so immediately and completely at ease with. We very quickly went from being strangers to limpets boogying to obscure music and, while basically always together, have grown immensely individually in that time – we’ve finally become bigger kids with bigger goals and bigger boots on.

But it’s been such a ride through career changes, houses, living off grid, new interests, new towns, illnesses, healths, and more – and I think it’s testament to how good we are that we didn’t fall apart while both working remote 9-5 jobs from a motorhome (for 2.5 years!).

Throughout it all, Rosie has been my songbird, keeping dark evenings lit with some ditty or another.

(But wait, there’s more!…)

I have to say that when I was a wee boy, I didn’t particularly understand what all the fuss was about with weddings.

I’d been to a few (mostly as a punter) and they were nice & I’d have a good grizzle with the niceness of it all, but I mainly felt that everyone looked stressed, and tired, and sort of like they’d rather be at the pub. In fact, I once played a wedding with my old band (for a favour) and mostly everyone was miserable, with a pretty clear & scowling divide in the middle, seemingly on family lines.

Maybe it was our playing, but you could hold the cake-slice in that tension.

Luckily, our wedding was the most opposite of that I could have imagined. It just felt right & so full of love.

Love for each other is maybe a given after 8 years, but what really got me was the love from & between everyone else – between people who’d only just met, people who’d not seen each other in years, people who’d previously been together, or by @georgemoulos
