“Little America”

Shalom Tomas Neuman

Fifty years of Fusionism in one object: paint, sculpture, found material, light, sound — refusing to stay in any single medium, the way the country it’s named for refuses to stay one thing.

Tonight! One of the most anticipated fall exhibition!

Extraordinarily Strange Fits: Betwixt False Light
& Familiars

The Khara Oxier-Mori solo exhibition

Khara’s work is brutal, often barbaric, but always necessary. Spanning two floors, this exhibition will awaken parts of yourself you forgot or thought long gone, and open chambers within you you never knew existed. You will leave more than you were when you arrived.

And when someone tells you “I love you,” you’ll feel it more profoundly, because there’s more of you to feel it. You’ll believe it more, because there’s more of you being seen. And when you give love, you’ll give it more fully and deeply, because there’s more of you giving it.

Some exhibitions soothe you. Others amuse you. But once in a while, one moves you.

Don’t miss the exhibition of the season.

Mark Tennant | Affection
Oil on canvas | 30 x 24 in (76.2 x 61 cm)

Two figures fold into one. A woman leans in with her eyes closed and rests her cheek against another person’s shoulder, and the space between them disappears. Tennant builds the moment in thick strokes of flesh, honey and indigo on a deep teal ground. He leaves the edges loose and unresolved, the way tenderness usually is. Affection doesn’t need to be explained. You recognize it instantly.

Laddie John Dill

Born in Long Beach, California in 1943, Laddie John Dill is one of the original artists of the West Coast Light and Space movement, the generation that stopped painting light and started using it as the material itself.

After graduating from Chouinard Art Institute in 1968, Dill worked as a printing apprentice alongside Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. By 28, he had his first New York solo show at Ileana Sonnabend Gallery, making him one of the first Los Angeles artists to bring Light and Space work to New York.

His “Light Sentences” are hand-blown glass tubes filled with gas and glowing in segmented bands of color. Dill reads each segment as a word and each tube as a sentence, a language written in light.

His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, LACMA, MOCA Los Angeles, SFMOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian, The Phillips Collection, the High Museum, MCA San Diego, the Hammer Museum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and Museo Jumex in Mexico. MoMA recently acquired one of his “Light Plains” sculptures.

More than fifty years in, the light hasn’t dimmed.

Michael Carson
Untitled, 18” × 24”, oil on panel

Two bodies at rest, built out of nothing but heat and light. Carson paints the figure the way memory holds it — a shoulder, a forearm across the face, a mouth gone slack in sleep — and lets the rest dissolve into bare panel.
