Maya Belorusskiy (SFS’28) is spending her #SummerSFS working at the U.S. Mission to the European Union (@useu) in Brussels, Belgium, as an intern with the Foreign Commercial Service. 🇧🇪 Belorusskiy is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar. Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps students build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. In her role, Belorusskiy interfaces with different U.S. agencies, European institutions and American industry stakeholders, drafting reports and conducting research on developments in EU digital and competition policy.“One of the first classes I took at Georgetown covered international trade law. Laura Kopec (SFS’27) is spending her #SummerSFS as an intern at the International Organization for Migration (@unmigration) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the peace and recovery division on the violence and conflict prevention team.🇨🇭 Kopec is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar. Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps students build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. In her role, Kopec works on projects that tackle topics such as transitional justice and the reintegration of former combatants. She has been particularly interested in how labor and gender are addressed by the IOM in post-conflict regions.“In the culture and politics major, we are encouraged to focus on people, not just institutions. I am able to use this mindset daily at the IOM, where I learn from each colleague and their experiences on the ground with beneficiaries,” Kopec says. by @georgetown_sfs

We join the Georgetown community in mourning the passing of University Professor Emeritus John L. Esposito (1940–2026), a leading scholar, beloved teacher and founding director of both the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (@acmcuwalsh) and The Bridge Initiative on Protecting Pluralism and Ending Islamophobia (@bridgeinit). His impressive body of work on the study of religion and international affairs, with a particular focus on Islam, helped to define and shape the modern study of Muslim societies.We offer our heartfelt condolences to Esposito’s family, friends and former students, and we are profoundly grateful for his enduring contributions. Riz Khan (SFS’28) is spending his #SummerSFS as a research intern at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (@the_ispu), a nonpartisan nonprofit focusing on providing objective education on American Muslims for informed policy decision-making. Khan is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar. Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps students build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. In his role, Khan contributes to the American Muslim Poll, which tracks civic engagement, health and identity. Benjamin Leong (SFS’27) is spending his #SummerSFS interning in New York City at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Division for Inclusive Social Development (@undesasocial). 🌐Leong is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar. Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps students build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. In his role, Leong reports on member states’ progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, designs workshops on demography and social participation on the African continent and supports conference coordination like COSP19.“From my academic coursework in international development and African studies to foreign language proficiency and cross-cultural dialogue, my learning inside and outside of the classroom at the SFS has prepared me to take on this role as a global public servant and to create real impact in my work,” he says. by @georgetown_sfs

Ryan Weierman (SFS’28) is spending her #SummerSFS interning in Vienna, Austria, International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the regional office for Europe/Central Asia. She is a member of the migrant protection unit, which seeks to protect and fulfill the rights of migrants. 🇦🇹Weierman is a 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholar. Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps them build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. In her role, Weierman supports the Assisted Voluntary Returns and Reintegration program by helping to develop a functional toolkit for case managers navigating vulnerable cases, including gender-based violence, trafficking and unaccompanied/separated children.“By learning from complex protection cases sent to thematic specialists at the regional office, this experience has reinforced my understanding of migration as a nonlinear process influenced by various identity factors, human subjectivities and structural forces,” she says. by @georgetown_sfs

#SummerSFS is in full swing! In our continuing series highlighting our 2026 Paul F. Pelosi Scholars, we meet Akiko Kono (SFS’28), who is interning in Mechelen, Belgium, with the city’s Masterplan Binnendijle, a European Urban Initiative-funded project to transform the Binnendijle River into an inclusive ecological corridor. In her role, she contributes to reports documenting project outcomes for the European Union and develops materials to support replication by other municipalities. 🇧🇪Empowering exceptional SFS sophomores and juniors with transformative public service opportunities, the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative (PSI) helps them build professional skills, connect with leading practitioners and scholars and gain hands-on experience to prepare for careers in public service. From analyzing biodiversity studies to synthesizing research on participatory governance initiatives, Kono has gained insight into how local governments can combine ecological restoration, public engagement and urban planning to build more sustainable cities.“I have loved seeing how the international policies we study at Georgetown shape community-level change. Whether swimming in the Binnendijle or working alongside city planners, ecologists, and public participation experts, I’ve come to better understand the complex balancing act involved in implementing EU goals,” Kono says. by @georgetown_sfs
