What happens when you take the hardest conversations all the way to the Vatican?

Last fall, students from Georgetown’s Conflict Transformation Lab (@ctlgeorgetown) traveled to Rome to tackle exactly that. Engaging in deep, face-to-face dialogue across different faiths, backgrounds, and political beliefs, the cohort met directly with Pope Leo XIV, who emphasized that bridge-building is a global priority.

Associate Professor of the Practice Rachel Milner Gillers calls the core skill these students are learning the “gut punch”: the ability to hear an opposing viewpoint that upsets you to your core, and choosing to sit with that discomfort rather than fighting back or scrolling away.

Whether they are engaging in cross-faith dialogue at the Vatican or bridging the rural-urban divide right here at home, McCourt students are learning what it takes to talk across our deepest differences and simply stay in the room.

Can an AI-generated summary change what you remember? A new study led by Mattea Sim, assistant research professor at McCourt’s @massivedata_gu, suggests it can. 🧠

Together with co-authors Yoshi Kohno (@casgeorgetown) and Yael Eiger (@uofwa), the team found that only 44.8% of participants correctly recalled a detail from a video after reading a misleading AI summary, compared to 83.6% who read an accurate one. Even people who knew the summary came from AI were affected.

“AI is a new method of delivering misinformation, and it has the potential to create these false memories for people who are reading that information,” Sim said. “I think we should be thinking really deeply and critically about whether and how AI should be used to summarize information, especially in high-stakes settings.”

This week, the McCourt School was honored to partner with @chicago.cred to host an episode screening of "How To Change The World," highlighting the critical community violence intervention work happening in Chicago.

The screening was followed by an inspiring, solutions-focused panel featuring Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan alongside Chicago CRED's Curtis Amir Toler, Billy Moore, and William "Juju" Brown. Moderated by Roberto Rodriguez, Doris Duke Distinguished Visiting Fellow at McCourt, the discussion explored actionable, community-based solutions to interrupt violence, advance criminal justice reform, and foster economic success in underserved neighborhoods. by @georgetownmccourt
