Blast furnaces. These two blast furnaces were located at the Wheeling Pittsburgh steel mill in Mingo. Junction, Ohio along the banks of the Ohio River. One of my grand fathers, my father, uncles, my brother and cousins all work in this mill. The blast furnaces no longer exist. georgekatichart.com by @georgio_canyon

Steel mill blast furnace. These types of blast furnaces were constructed over 100 years ago and some are still in use. The fuel that is put into the furnace are coke, a directive of coal, iron ore and limestone. These ingredients are heated at extreme high temperatures for a certain period of time and then the furnace is tapped, releasing the liquid steel before it flows into a hot car. The steel cools in the shape of large ingots and is then transported to the rolling mill where the ingots are reheated and pounded into thin sheets of steel. georgekatichart. by @georgio_canyon

Steel mill town. Mingo Junction, Ohio. The original mill in Mingo jct was called the Carnegie Steel Mill and later it became part the Wheeling Steel Corporation. My mother’s family lived in Mingo and my grandfather and his sons worked in the mill. It later became Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. by @georgio_canyon

Steel mill towns. Many steel and coal companies owned small houses located next to the mills and mines. The rent was low but the noise, dust, and smells were ever present. by @georgio_canyon

Steel Mill Town. I was born and raised in a steel mill town. Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel and Weirton Steel employed thousands of men and women. These mills and those workers are no longer here. I grew up living in a house owned by the mill. Those houses are also long gone. by @georgio_canyon

Steel mill town. This painting depicts the company owned houses that the workers and their families lived in until 1962 when they were torn down. We lived in one of these houses until I was 16 years old. The steel mill across the highway was the Wheeling Steel company’s coke Plant that produced coke. Coke is an important ingredient in the making of steel. by @georgio_canyon

Steel mill town. This painting depicts Coketown, the unincorporated village that was located across the highway from the Wheeling Steel coke plant which produced a product called coke. Coke is a main ingredient in the production of steel. Coke starts out as coal which is heated at high temperatures for a period of time before other ingredients are burned off to produce the coke. The coke is then mixed with iron ore and limestone to produce steel. by @georgio_canyon
