It’s Tongue Out Tuesday and Sophie and Gerald love their enrichment items!

Enrichment items like this allow them to use their tongues to forage for food, increases mental stimulation and slows down their eating!

Giraffe kisses 💋🦒

Fun Fact: Giraffes have bluish/ purple tongues! Scientists believe that it’s to help them not their tongues sunburned when foraging on the trees all day long.

Liberty has been rocking her touch training! We may be biased, but we think we have one of the smartest babies around! by @geralds.life

Can you spot the difference??

Here is a thermal image of Liberty standing next to mom, Harriet, captured recently by Dr. Liza Dadone with the @giraffe_veterinary_services. Notice anything different between them?

Dr. Dadone has experienced a common trend with giraffe calves— their flank spots don’t show the same warmth as in adults! When asked what her theory was, this was the answer:

“Difference in skin blood flow or thermoregulation as they mature could contribute. . . Liberty’s warmer fetlocks are also a normal pattern I see in young giraffe, likely associated with active growth around the growth plates. It’s a lovely image showing how thermal patterns differ between calves and adults!”

Isn’t science cool?! 🌈 🦒 by @geralds.life

Here’s a different perspective of Liberty!

We recently welcomed Dr. Liza Dadone with the @giraffe_veterinary_services for one of her regular visits to monitor our herd. Using a specialized thermal imaging camera, she can identify subtle temperature changes that may indicate inflammation, circulation changes, or potential areas of concern.

Thermal imaging is a valuable tool in preventative veterinary care because it can help identify issues before visible symptoms develop, allowing us to investigate early and stay one step ahead.

Because the best medical care isn’t just about treating problems. It’s about preventing them whenever possible! 💕 by @geralds.life

Liberty had her hoof touched for the very first time, and she accepted it with grace! 🦒

Exposure at this young age is critical to setting our animals up for success. The earlier we can introduce handling and routine husbandry procedures, the more comfortable they become with the care they’ll need throughout their lives.

Our goal is to build that trust now so that when it’s time for her first hoof trim, it’s a familiar and stress-free experience. Starting early allows us to stay ahead of potential foot issues, address concerns before they become bigger problems, and set Liberty up for a lifetime of healthy feet! by @geralds.life
