Musing on last summer's days spent with Katharine beside the Ionian Sea... To quote the great Caroline Alexander: "The famous likening of the sea to wine has endured through ages, from at least the late eighth century bc, the composition date of the Iliad and the phrase “wine-dark” is now so securely lodged in our collective consciousness as to be known even by people who have never read Homer. It is not the Odyssey, Homer’s sailor’s saga, but the earlier, land-bound Iliad, set on Trojan soil, that first launched one of the best-known of all Homeric epithets on the world. The phrase occurs here only six times, the same incidence as “tumultuous” or “loud-sounding,” while the less vivid “gray-gleaming” is used a dozen times. Yet it is “wine-dark” that has stuck with us, and it is clear why. The phrase is alluring, stirring, and indistinctly evocative. It is also, strictly speaking, incomprehensible, and for all the time the phrase has been relished, readers and scholars have debated what the term actually means. In what way did the sea remind Homer of dark wine? And of the myriad ways to evoke the sea, why compare it to wine at all? A translator’s task is to render into English both the plain meaning and the sensibility—the felt meaning—of a Homeric phrase or word, and so it is a duty, albeit a perilous one, to plunge deeper into this celebrated sea phrase, and grope for clarity."

I've been working on animating some of my "text-textured" digital artwork, and here's something I finished editing today.
In the epic Irish tale, the Táin Bó Cúailnge (Cattle Raid of Cooley), Fedelm is a female prophet who foretells the downfall of Queen Medb's army through a vision of bloodshed.
This very short animated film is an impressionistic evocation of what Fedelm prophesized.

Hi, friends! Here's an update on my 'Plant Speech' project if anyone's interested:
Things are progressing nicely: the hardware and the various codes are working very well together now, so one of my plants is producing interesting sounds from itself. The next step here is to have the sounds be influenced by the proximity or distance of a human visitor. Currently, the voice-like sounds continue endlessly, changing gradually over time. Kate says they're quite meditative.
I've written a short paper about what this project is about and how it relates to my other digital art. (This is a good way of pretending to myself that I'm still in academia lol). [Link in first comment].

It may not look like much right now, but my proof-of-concept prototype for "Plant Speech" is finally starting to WORK! I'm irrationally exuberant about getting this first step working-- up until now I was having all sorts of difficulties getting the various elements to play nicely with each other, until I finally realized that I was kind of overthinking the way the microprocessor-mediated plant signals should interact with a complicated Python program I put together to "sonify" those signals. Turns out I was reinventing the wheel, at least for this stage of the project. Instead, by just using (maybe abusing!) and fine-tuning a SuperCollider sketch code, everything started coming together. (Yeah, this is how I tell you I'm not a great coder without telling you I'm not a great coder 😂).
Now, right now it's pretty far from where I want it to go and how it should sound (it looks like it's slightly stuck on a small group of phonemes), and Kate's Jade plant is probably not the ideal subject (these particular leaves are not great conductors), but figuring out the next steps is where the real fun begins. Did someone say "rabbit-hole"?!
