Germany’s secret spring Halloween ✨🧹🔮 Forget October - Walpurgisnacht brings the ultimate spooky vibes on April 30th. 🔥 Would you brave the bonfire, or lock your doors? by @germanyinmidwest

🏃‍♀️🇩🇪🇺🇸 October brings the marathon back to Chicago, and with it, a longstanding connection between two sister cities!

Founded by Christoph Lichtenfeld in 2001, the Chicago-Hamburg Marathon Exchange brings runners from both cities together through a shared love of running, cultural exchange, and community. The exchange also brings together police officers and firefighters from Chicago and Hamburg, creating opportunities to share professional experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting relationships across the Atlantic.

A special thank you to Dietrich Stegert and the Förderkreis Hamburg Chicago e.V., alongside the Hamburg Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, for helping make this exchange possible. Their dedication helps strengthen the bond between Chicago and Hamburg year after year. by @germanyinmidwest

🇩🇪🤝🇺🇸 A major milestone for German-American economic relations!

German life sciences company Bayer plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio. The facility will produce medicines for cancer, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, strengthening the supply of innovative treatments for patients in the U.S. and worldwide.

The investment is expected to create around 600 high-skilled permanent jobs and 1,500 construction jobs. The first phase of manufacturing is expected to begin operations in 2031.

Honorary Consul Katja Garvey attended the announcement alongside Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Bayer CEO Bill Anderson, marking an important step for German investment, innovation and economic growth in the Midwest.

🇩🇪🇺🇸 On October 3, German Fest in Indianapolis celebrated German-American friendship with the presentation of the German American Friendship Award to Prof. Claudia Grossmann.

A longtime German lecturer and former German Program Director at Indiana University Indianapolis, Prof. Grossmann has dedicated decades to German-language education and cultural exchange in Indiana. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Honorary Consul Sven Schumacher joined the festivities to celebrate the enduring friendship between Germany and Indiana. by @germanyinmidwest

German Unity Day brought a special occasion to St. Louis this year: the opening of the new Goethe-Institut on October 3, welcoming the institute back to the city after nearly three decades. Consul General Michael Ahrens joined the celebrations to mark this important milestone.

Among those in attendance were Serap Güler, Minister of State at the German Federal Foreign Office ( @sgueler ); Gitte Zschoch, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut ( @gitte_zschoch ); and St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer ( @mayorcaraspencer ), as well as members of the region’s cultural, educational, political, and business communities.

The new institute will create further opportunities to learn German, engage in cultural exchange, and strengthen ties between Germany and the United States across Missouri and the wider Midwest.

Congratulations to the Goethe-Institut on its return to St. Louis! We look forward to the new possibilities this chapter will bring for German-American relations in our region.

🇩🇪 Last week, we held our yearly Day of German Unity celebration at the beautiful Chicago Cultural Center, bringing together friends, partners, and members of the German-American community from across the Midwest.

Today, on German-American Day, we’re especially grateful for the incredible community that brings together German heritage, American life, and a shared passion for keeping these connections strong.

A huge thank you to our sponsors and to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so special. We’re grateful for your continued support and for the many ways the German-American community enriches the Midwest.

Here’s to community, connection, and the enduring ties between Germany and the United States! 🇩🇪🇺🇸 by @germanyinmidwest

A special day at our school! 🌎✨

On World Teachers’ Day, we were delighted to welcome @sgueler, Minister of State at the German Federal Foreign Office, to our school community, accompanied by Michael Ahrens, Consul General of Germany in Chicago, and Fabrice Liesegang, German Language Advisor and Specialist with the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA).

During her visit, she met with our students and spent time with our Student Parliament (Schüler:innenparlament) – a student-led initiative founded last year. Their conversation was a wonderful example of democracy education in action, giving our students the opportunity to share their perspectives, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue. 🗳️💬

The visit also highlighted the important role of German Schools Abroad (DAS) in bringing people, languages, and cultures together and in contributing to Germany’s foreign cultural and educational policy.

We are proud of the many ways our students learn to use their voices, take an active role in our community, and connect with the world around them. And on World Teachers’ Day, we’re especially grateful to our dedicated teachers, who make these opportunities possible every day and help our students learn, grow, and make their voices heard. 💙

Thank you, Minister Güler, for visiting us and spending time with our students, teachers, and school community – and a heartfelt thank-you to our teachers for all they do every day!

Freiburg might genuinely be one of my favorite places in the world 🇩🇪 It doesn’t feel overwhelmed with tourist, the entire city is ridiculously charming and walking through the streets genuinely made me feel like the main character and a fairytale 👑

One of my favorite parts was the nearly 500-year-old market that takes over the city center almost every day except for Sundays and you have to make time for a black forest cake making class at @foerster_max_freiburg! 🎂

Getting invited on this trip to Germany was an absolute dream. 🇩🇪 When I first started creating content, I wanted to be a mini female Anthony Bourdain, but realistically, I didn’t have the money to keep traveling. So I focused on Chicago. I love our city so much, but my dream is to travel the world. Needless to say, I teared up a bit when I got my acceptance email back from @germanyinmidwest on this trip. 🥹

Germany completely blew me away, but Freiburg was easily my favorite stop. It’s basically the quintessential German fairytale town, without feeling packed with tourists. I’m just so grateful I got to experience it.

Chicago will always have my heart when it comes to food, but there are definitely a few things we can take notes from on Berlin 🇩🇪🍴 They have some of the most incredible food halls, secret no-filming restaurants, and some seriously unique dining experiences you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
