POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
My kids and I love a “cute scary” picture book at this time of the year. Who Said BOO? Is definitely on our favourites list for 2026.

The story is catchy from the very beginning, ideal for reading aloud. It takes readers into the green, green castle which is in the green green forest, and everything around is, of course, very green. Which makes it difficult to locate exactly what is scaring the royal family. Luckily, the king and queen have a very colourful idea.

This story is engaging not only to listen to, but also to look at. The illustrations are so important to understanding the story and the focus on colour is super engaging for young readers. Children will enjoy playing along with the story, understanding exactly what is going on when the characters cannot.

We’ve read this book over and over and I’m sure you will too.

Halloween is not far away! Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing some new picture books perfect for the spooky season.

Tilly’s First Spell is the sequel to Tilly’s New Broom, created by Mary Anastasiou @maryanastasiou_author and Giorgia Clerico. @mi.doo_illustration
If you’re a fan of Mary‘s books, then you’ll know that she loves this time of the year. So it comes as no surprise that she has written a fun follow-up to the original Tilly picture book.

Tilly is eager to cast her first spell, but things don’t go as smoothly as planned. Tilly struggled to gain control over the situation, but she soon learns an important lesson about making magic.

Mary is a master of writing in catchy rhyme. Her lyrical work is so engaging for kids, and pairing it with these vibrant illustrations makes for a fun read at any time of the year, not just Halloween.

Such an intriguing title, right?
It certainly grabbed my attention!

There’s A Chicken In The House, is an endearing and funny story, about a wandering chicken that is determined to explore a family’s house. Is there a reason why the chicken wanders into the home? You’ll just have to wait to see the ending.

I love picture looks like this one. Simple ideas in common settings, that make you laugh and make you think. Created by Sonya Hartnett @hartnett_sonya and Lucia Masciullo @luciart74 this sweet story is one that kids will want to read over and over. I certainly do.

I’ve included a flip through of this book above.

If it were your birthday today, what would you wish for?

Eddie & Moo and the Garden of Presents, sees the main characters going on an adventure, to try and create the best birthday party and present for their friend Big Princess Dinosaur. They soon realise that finding the right present can be tricky, but with a bit of imagination they seem find exactly what they need.

This beautiful book is filled with such wonder, imagination and innocence. The characters take on a very childlike presence, making it a perfect read for young children. The text is whimsical and the dialogue is fun. The mixed media illustrations create for such interesting spreads.

Created by the bestselling Jane Godwin @janiegodwin and Anna Walker @_annawalker_ you know you’ll be in for a treat with this picture book. Take a look at the flip through above.

What happens when we die?
It’s a question that is difficult to answer, but nonetheless, it’s a question that kids sometimes ask.

The Other Side, by Philip Bunting @philip.bunting is a considered look at the answers to this question, in a way that is appropriate for young people.

The Grim Reaper (Grimster) takes readers on a journey across the ages and across the world to find out the stories that people have told about what happens once our time on earth is over. But does anyone really know?

Published in Philip’s signature style, this book is both humorous and informative, and amazingly turns a very bleak subject into something worth reading about.

What communities are you or your children a part of?

The term Community, means so much, and it looks different to everyone. This beautiful book by Zanni Louise @zannilouise and Tony Flowers @tony_flowers99 is an ode to all of this, and shows readers that the important thing is that we feel that sense of belonging.

Written lyrically, and illustrated with fun, detailed artworks, this lovely picture book is filled with heart and warmth. It shows how we can all find our place, with communities that share and create a sense of belonging.

When I come across books like Hari’s Bones, it reminds me how fortunate I am to get to experience children’s literature on the Get Kids Booked platform.

Moving, symbolic, thoughtful and just that little bit extra, is how I would describe Hari’s Bones. It’s a perfect example of why picture books are not just for children. Agree?

Hari is a character that reminds me of myself. A cautious, gentle risk-taker, yet still very curious. She carries her bones in her backpack, and avoids the trouble that others get into. But one day, trouble comes to find Hari.

Written poetically, with breathtaking illustrations, this book leaves so much to observe and think about. In addition, the incredible Matt Ottley @mattottleyart has composed music to accompany the story, and is an available to download for free. Check out www.tsopb.com.au to view the incredible work by Matt and Tina Wilson. @tinawilsonartist It is sure to add another emotive element to the sharing of this book.

If you enjoyed the book, Bernie Thinks In Boxes, you’ll love this new release from Jess Horn @jesshornauthor and Zoë Bennett, @zoebennettillustration A Hat For Every Harriet.

This thoughtful story gives a perspective to neurodiversity that kids will understand. It recognises that we all think differently and accepting yourself is so important.

Harriet wears many hats. She has a different hat for different moments and feelings. But sometimes it seems like she needs all her hats at once. Harriet finds a way to be truly herself.

Such great messages are presented in such an attractive way. This is a picture book perfect for all settings and ages. This timely book is ideal for helping kids navigate their identity and social expectations.

Picture books about grief and loss are difficult to craft. They are often personal and emotional.

The Goodbye Tree, by Pip Harry @piphaz is an incredibly insightful and moving story, inspired by Pip’s personal loss, and how she and her family said goodbye to a special family member.

Nick and his family wake early. They gather special things and plant a tree. The seeds that they sow, serve as a living reminder of someone they will never forget.

Written poetically and solemnly, the artworks by Christina Booth @christinaboothillustration pair remarkably.

Do your kids enjoy a day off school? Despite having the sniffles, are they actually excited to have some fun at home?

Herbie can’t wait to play video games and watch TV on his day off school. But the day seems to pass slowly, and eventually his mind wanders to what exciting things might be happening at school!

This action-packed, imaginative story intrigued Miss 10 and Mr 7, making them laugh out loud.

It might be school holidays in Australia at the moment, but this hilarious picture book is one that kids will enjoy reading at any time of the year.
