Quartz with Halloysite Inclusions
Cabiche, Quípama, Western Boyacá
Province, Boyacá Department, Colombia
6.0 × 4.0 × 3.4 cm

Like little flames captured in crystal, the golden-yellow terminations of this Colombian quartz create a beautiful contrast against the remarkable clarity of the prisms beneath them. A graceful arrangement of elongated crystals fans outward from a delicate bed of smaller quartz points, each carrying its own concentration of color. The result is a wonderfully intricate composition, with warm apricot tones appearing to float above the colorless crystal.

Affectionately known as “Mango Quartz,” this distinctive material emerged from the Cabiche discoveries beginning in 2017, in a region far better known for its emeralds. The yellow coloration is attributed to fine inclusions of halloysite, a clay mineral whose delicate, fibrous particles become concentrated toward the crystal terminations. What makes this example especially charming is the repetition of that phenomenon throughout the cluster, from the prominent upright crystals to the tiniest points below. An extraordinary little expression of mineral growth, where even the smallest details contribute to the beauty of the whole.

Fluorapophyllite on Stilbite
Well 2, Momin Akhada Village,
Rahuri, Maharashtra, India
15.5 × 13 × 11.5 cm
Ex. Lonestar Collection

This specimen originates from the Well 2 find at Momin Akhada, a locality that produced some of the most visually striking spherical fluorapophyllite ever recovered. Material from this well reshaped expectations for the species, yielding crystal spheres with exceptional consistency, definition, and surface brilliance.

This piece preserves three complete fluorapophyllite spheres on a single stilbite matrix, each formed independently within the same cavity. The spheres are composed of tightly repeated crystal faces that return light evenly across the surface, creating the dense sparkle associated with the trade term “disco ball apophyllite.” Examples showing multiple intact spheres of this size from Well 2 are very uncommon, particularly with the matrix preserved.

The stilbite matrix is original and intact, carrying the three spheres exactly as they were found. You are not looking at a single great crystal, you are looking at a situation that almost never survives extraction. The visual impact comes from that shared survival, three complete forms remaining together, unchanged, and still in conversation with one another.

One of the true rare classics, never to be repeated, and available for collection.

Chrysoberyl, Sixling Twin
Itaguaçu, Espírito Santo, Brazil
1.9 × 1.8 × 1.7 cm
Historic 1940 Allan Caplan Find

A remarkable survivor of one of the most celebrated discoveries in Brazilian mineral history, this golden-yellow chrysoberyl sixling belongs to the legendary 1940 find made by Allan Caplan. The discovery produced some of the finest chrysoberyl crystals ever recovered, with exceptional examples eventually entering major museums and private collections around the world.

The extraordinary geometry is the result of cyclic twinning, in which six individual crystal segments grow together in a repeating arrangement, creating the characteristic six-pointed form. Here, rich honey-yellow color glows through beautifully translucent crystal, while sharply defined faces, intricate growth patterns, and brilliant internal reflections reveal the complexity of its formation.

More than eight decades after its discovery, this beautiful piece of Brazilian mineralogical history remains a testament to the extraordinary crystallography and enduring significance of the Caplan chrysoberyls.

Benitoite with Neptunite
Dallas Gem Mine, Santa Rita Peak,
San Benito County, California, USA
2.9 × 2.3 × 1.8 cm

An extraordinary miniature from California’s legendary Dallas Gem Mine, dominated by a magnificent sapphire-blue benitoite displaying all three points of its triangular termination intact. Such exceptional preservation is uncommon, particularly in a crystal of this prominence, where even the slightest damage can compromise its distinctive geometry. Surrounded by lustrous black neptunite, smaller benitoites, and contrasting white natrolite, the specimen presents a wonderfully balanced composition with an entirely different character revealed from behind.

Discovered in 1907, benitoite was named for San Benito County and remains one of California’s most celebrated mineralogical treasures. The Dallas Gem Mine is its type locality, renowned for producing the remarkable association of blue benitoite, black neptunite, and white natrolite. More than a century after its discovery, benitoite continues to inspire the same fascination that first brought this extraordinary mineral to the world’s attention.

Tsavorite
Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mountains,
Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania
2.3 × 2.2 × 1.2 cm
10.52 g

A complete tsavorite of this size and color is a remarkable survivor. Its beautifully developed dodecahedral faces frame a magnificent emerald-apple green, with a rich translucency that gives the crystal an extraordinary depth of color.

The Merelani Hills have produced the world’s finest tsavorite, yet finding a crystal of these proportions with its entire form preserved is exceptionally difficult. A delicate trace of graphite remains on the reverse, a lovely reminder of the earth from whence this magnificent jewel came.

Native Gold
Serra do Caldeirão claims,
Pontes e Lacerda, Mato Grosso, Brazil
3.3 × 2.5 cm | 16.4 g

*sold

In 2015, a remarkable discovery of crystallized native gold in the hills of Mato Grosso produced some of the most extraordinary gold specimens to emerge from Brazil. The occurrence was brief, but the material was unforgettable, celebrated for its intricate, sculptural formations and brilliant natural gold.

This exceptional 16.4-gram specimen is a beautiful example of that discovery, with thick, intergrown branches of native gold displaying deeply textured, ribbed surfaces and delicate, layered growth. The individual formations twist and fold around one another, creating an intricate, almost architectural structure with remarkable depth from every angle. Its rich yellow color and brilliant metallic luster make the intricate crystallization even more captivating.

The Serra do Caldeirão discovery remains particularly significant because the initial production was limited, and comparable crystallized specimens have not been reported in any meaningful quantity since. More than a decade later, these distinctive gold formations remain a fascinating chapter in Brazilian mineral history.

Stannite on Arsenopyrite with Fluorite
Yaogangxian Mine, Yizhang Co.,
Chenzhou, Hunan, China
3.8 x 2.5 x 3.4 cm
Ex. Tom Zhang

A genuinely unusual miniature from Yaogangxian, this specimen brings together stannite, arsenopyrite, and two generations of purple fluorite in one compact composition. The fluorite immediately draws the eye, shifting from softer lilac growth to sharper, more saturated purple cubes, while a single unusually elongated, euhedral arsenopyrite crystal cuts through the composition carrying stannite across its surface.

Fine stannite from Yaogangxian is scarce to begin with, and seeing it developed directly on an elongated euhedral arsenopyrite crystal within a fluorite-rich composition makes the association far less common than the more familiar combinations from the mine.

For such a mineralogically complex piece, the composition stays remarkably clean and readable, with each species distinct enough to appreciate on its own.

Brazilianite with Albite and Muscovite
Córrego Frio Mine, Linópolis,
Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil
5.5 × 4.5 × 2.6 cm
Ex. Tom Zhang

Sold

This is the kind of brazilianite that makes me stop in my tracks: a large, focal crystal in intensely saturated chartreuse anchors the specimen, surrounded by snowy albite and curled books of golden muscovite. The color is exceptional, but the composition is what makes the piece feel so complete. Albite and mica wrap around the brazilianite from multiple sides, framing the crystal without obscuring its broad faces, sharp termination, rich translucency, or color.

Córrego Frio is the type locality for brazilianite and one of the defining localities for the species. The first gemmy material was discovered there in the early 1940s, and brazilianite was formally described as a new mineral in 1945. The pegmatite produced crystals in cavities alongside albite, muscovite, and quartz, and this specimen preserves that classic association beautifully.

What I especially love here is how much the piece changes as it turns. The brazilianite remains the focal point, but the balance shifts constantly between the central crystal, the bright albite, and the layered muscovite. It has the depth and movement of a true 360-degree specimen rather than a single-face display piece.

Cobaltoan Calcite with Chrysocolla on Goethite
Mashamba West Mine, Mutshatsha,
Lualaba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
5.8 × 5.0 × 2.7 cm

A deeply saturated crown of cobalt-bearing calcite with overlapping, complete crystals that creates exceptional volume and dimension. The crystals range from translucent to transparent, with bright luster and subtle variations in pink and violet that give the cluster remarkable depth.

The calcite sits above a sculptural goethite matrix composed of rounded, botryoidal formations with intricate pale surface patterning. A slight hint of sky blue chrysocolla appears at the upper right, adding an unexpected touch of color without distracting from the strength of the calcite and goethite association.

The unusual composition is what really sets this piece apart. The vivid pink calcite and heavily textured goethite create a striking division of color and form, while the small accent of chrysocolla adds just enough contrast to make the specimen even more visually complex.

Apatite
Sapo Mine, Ferruginha, Conselheiro Pena,
Minas Gerais, Brazil
6.7 × 4.6 × 4.1 cm

The Sapo apatites have an unmistakable presence, with broad olive-green crystals showing smoky depth, glassy faces, and warmer yellow-green translucency along the edges. Here, a dense arrangement of sharply defined hexagonal crystals builds across pale albite, with enough separation between them to appreciate the individual forms from several angles.

These remarkable apatites came from a series of important finds at Sapo beginning in the late 1990s and continuing through the 2000s, with especially notable material appearing around 2004 to 2007. Their flattened habit and unusual color zoning were distinctive enough that the material became the subject of considerable mineralogical study, and Sapo was later given a full locality feature in “The Mineralogical Record.”

The color is especially good on this piece. Some crystals read deeper and mossier through their thicker centers, while the thinner margins open into a clearer olive to yellow-green, giving the cluster far more dimension in person than a single photograph can capture.
