Can a game be timeless...by design? That’s one of the many questions I want to answer with JOKERS, my first indie card game. I’m David A. Hays, a Creative Director at Riot Games, and after years of helping build characters, worlds, and campaigns for games at massive scale, I’m building something of my own. The dream is simple: A game that lives on the kitchen table,
between UNO and Poker decks. Comes with us on vacation. Gets pulled out at family gatherings. Gets taught, replayed, argued over, and remembered. JOKERS is built on classic card-game logic and hand building but with a clever new cast of cartoon characters who bring the chaos: Rabbit, Mouse, Crow, and Fox. Because mechanics make a game work. But characters make people care.
And the combination of both become timeless. #JOKERS #IndieGame #CardGame #TabletopGames #GameDesign #GameNight #FamilyGames #Poker by @getjokers
Well, I'm finally doing the thing.... I started a video series for JOKERS, my first original card game, my first solo IP, and possibly the most elaborate excuse I’ve ever created to make cartoon animals blow each other up with dynamite. I’ll be posting the behind-the-scenes build: design, play testing, packaging, production, mistakes, questionable decisions, and whatever else explodes between now and launch. Stay tuned for more! Introducing 'JOKERS' 🧨 Poker strategy meets cartoon chaos! ❤️💣🔥♣️♦️♠️🧨💥 Poker gets a new cast of characters and a new bag of tricks with JOKERS,® the family friendly party game that transforms the classics, blending hand-building strategy with slapstick sabotage to create an explosive new game for all ages! The decks are finally here. 🧨 Months of sketches, prototypes, playtests, revisions and probably way too much obsessing over tiny details…all packed into one little box. JOKERS takes the familiar fun of classic card games and adds a whole new bag of tricks. Easy to learn, endlessly replayable, and packed with Saturday morning cartoon chaos. First Edition decks are available now at GetJokers.com. Who are you blowing up first? ❤️♣️♦️💣 #gamenight #CardGames #FamilyGames #TabletopGames #cardgame by @getjokers
In case you forgot! 😎 The original pranksters are on the air again at Cartoon Network! Some things don’t hold up….and some just get better with age. by @getjokers
First Edition JOKERS decks ship with hand-numbered ORIGINAL PRANKSTER Certificate of Authenticity cards. 💎 One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about making JOKERS is getting to make something that actually exists in the real world. I spend so much of my life making things that ultimately live on a screen, so there’s something really satisfying about working on something physical that people can hold onto, or share with others. From the beginning, I’ve wanted JOKERS to feel like more than just a game...I want the cards and characters to become family heirlooms that have a timeless quality to them, and I’ve tried to put enough care into the artwork, printing and little details that the decks feel like objects worth keeping. For the First Edition, I decided to make these little Certificates of Authenticity to include with the first 500 decks. I’m printing them, adding the seal and custom ORIGINAL PRANKSTER embossing, hand-numbering and distributing myself, which is probably way more work than is necessary, but I'm genuinely enjoying this part of the journey. Exciting that actual decks are almost making their way into people’s homes...it's a cool milestone. I have plenty of ideas for the future, but my deepest hope is to just keep building this for a long time and to create something with enough personality, craft and staying power that people will want to hold onto it and make it part of their story. Here's to chasing big dreams! -Saturday Studios #JOKERS #GetJokers #PlayingCards #CardArt #FirstEdition #CollectibleCards #GameDesign #IndieGame #MadeToLast #BuildingInPublic by @getjokers
ARTIST PROFILE: Jamie Hewlett What we studied. What we borrowed. What we built. Hewlett’s work shows us that designing a band of iconic characters means every choice must be intentional to create harmony AND distinction simultaneously. Bold silhouettes. Sharp shape language. Modern attitude rooted in 2D animation fundamentals. Lesson 01: Silhouette First. If you can recognize the character in shadow, you’ve done your job. → Every JOKER was designed to read instantly across the table. Lesson 02: Attitude is Design. A sideways glance says more than a paragraph of lore. → Expression and posture define personality before mechanics ever do. Lesson 03: Subculture = Soul. Pull from music, street art, animation history, then make it yours. → Our misfit band of JOKERS feels cohesive because they share DNA, not costumes. Great character design makes you feel something before you meet them. That's Mr. Fox's motto. In JOKERS, “playing fair” is more of a suggestion. Mister Fox prefers a shadier path to victory: bluff a little, scheme a lot, smile like you got lucky and have absolutely no intention of apologizing for it. #JOKERS #GetJokers #CardGame #FamilyGameNight #GameNight #TabletopGames #PartyGame #IndieGame #BoardGameCommunity #CardGames #TabletopGaming #KidsVsParents #StrategyGame #PlayingCards #GameDesign by @getjokers
