While taking a walk today, I stumbled upon a community garden in Logan Square. Did you know there are over 850 community gardens in the city of Chicago? Attention birders! Did you know you can track migration patterns via radar? The red arrow shows an area with a high concentration of birds, and looks unique in comparison to the green storm clouds traveling across middle America. Another important thing to look up is the direction of the wind. Currently since birds are migrating south , northerly winds (named for the direction they are coming from) will bring many migratory birds into your area. If you are planning to go birding, this is an excellent tool to help predict the possibility of seeing more birds! Some of you may know that I am an active member of the Brookfield chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers. This organization has raised $20,000 for a variety of animal conservation causes this year alone. On October 1, at the Miller Ale House in North Riverside, we will be hosting a fundraising dinner to give back 15% of the proceeds to our organization’s professional development grant. This grant helps raise money to send our members (many whom are animal care professionals) to conferences, courses and workshops that further our education on up to date animal care practices. It also helps send members abroad to do conservation field work as well. This grant is important to our organization because it is a way to give back to the individuals who worked hard to raise the $20,000+ for different conservation causes every year. Please consider attending, or pass along to friends and family in the area. All you need to do is enjoy dinner and mention, or show this flyer. One of the great things about Chicago is our access to Lake Michigan! A few weeks ago I went on a stroll for two hours and was able to walk from Buena Park down to North Avenue Beach. This path runs 18 miles in total and is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. While I was out walking, we saw runners, skate boarders, swimmers, sailors, fisherman, bikers etc! There are also restaurants along the path so after we stopped walking we sat down for a bite at The Lakefront. It was a wonderful way to spend a weekend day! #getoutsidechicago by @getoutsidechicago

Today I went to Bridgeport’s free community yoga in Henry C. Palmisano Nature Park. A small group of us practiced while watching the sunset over the city. Although the noises of traffic were present, I was still able to tune it out and feel the breeze on my face and hear the chirps of birds flying overhead. This park includes pathways through wetland restoration, an athletic track, municipal fields, outdoor exercise equipment and a fishing pond. On a kayaking kick lately! Yesterday morning I spent three hours exploring the Skokie Lagoons with the Sierra Club. We were able to explore three basins of the lagoon and saw so many birds, some of which I still need to look up on my Merlin ID app. The one cool bird thing featured in my pictures is a tree full of cormorants. We counted 12 at one point! The lagoon is also full of many types of heron, egret and duck. People use this area not only for wildlife viewing but also for fishing. Hiking trails are easily accessible to take you down to the waterfront. Finally, If you love biking, the Des planes trail runs around the lagoon and is a short ride up to the Chicago Botanical Garden. Have any of you been here? Humboldt Park now has kayaks and swan boats! You can rent these for 30 minutes, up to all day. Other rentals included are bikes and scooters. It’s perfect for families, dates or even a little time for yourself. I rented this kayak for an hour and picked up a few pieces of trash in the lagoon but mostly enjoying the sights. Stumbled upon this beautiful park while dog sitting. If you are looking to be surrounded by green, this is a great place to visit. There is also a tranquil spring running through the park as well.
