The harvest moon is rising soon! Look for it TONIGHT (and tomorrow night).

(Unless you're in the middle of a nor'easter, like we are!)

Why is this full moon called a harvest moon? Because it is the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox, which occurred earlier this week. Rising after sunset for several nights in a row, its bright light traditionally allowed farmers to work late into the night as they gathered their crops in preparation for winter.

Before winter arrives, brown bears in Alaska spend their days eating as much as they can. Now you get to meet the contenders and vote for your favorite chunky champion. Who will take the crown?

Tomorrow is the first official full day of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. What are you most looking forward to this coming season?

Autumn Equinox. Winter Solstice. You’ve heard the terms, you know they indicate an official change in season... but have you ever wondered why one is called “solstice” and the other “equinox”?

EQUINOX (spring, fall)
- The point where the Sun’s path is right over the Equator.
- This results in the day and night being of equal length.

SOLSTICE (summer, winter)
- The point where the Sun’s path in the sky is the farthest North or South from the equator.
- This results in the longest day of the year (summer) or the shortest day of the year (winter).

How did summer go by so fast?

One minute we’re soaking up long summer days, and the next there’s a chill in the air, leaves are starting to change, and fall is right around the corner.

Does it already feel like fall where you live? Any leaves changing yet?

There’s something bittersweet about the change of seasons, but it’s also a good reminder to slow down and notice what’s happening around us.

Take a walk, crunch through a few leaves, and enjoy these last little moments of summer before fall officially arrives.

I now consider myself an expert on this subject: gifts for outdoorsy teens.

Every birthday and Christmas for the past 10+ years has been focused on practical-yet-fun gifts for my outdoorsy boys. We've gone through a few phases (mountain biking being largely replaced by hiking), but the theme has stayed consistent: quality gear that will last through many adventures.

Happy Collect Rocks Day!

You have one assignment: Go out and collect some rocks!

Want to extend the activity? Get sorting!

Step 1: Note the similarities and differences of your rocks.
Step 2: Think about different ways to categorize your rocks:
- by color
- by shape
- by size
- by texture
Step 3: Sort your rocks!
Step 4: Re-sort your rocks.
Step 5: Repeat to your heart's content!

2. Look for heart-shaped rocks.
3. Look for rocks that spell out letters.
