MEMENTO MORI 💀

Did you know that Memento Mori is Latin for "Remember you will die"?

A wee bit morbid, I know, haha, but there's actually a lovely bit of Scottish history behind this design.

When I'm out walking around Auld Aisle Cemetery here in Kirkintilloch, I often see these old symbols carved into the gravestones. Skulls, crossbones, hourglasses and flowers, all there to remind us that life is short and precious.

I find these old carvings absolutely fascinating, so back in 2023 I decided to turn a wee bit of that history into an overlay mosaic crochet pattern.

And the best bit? It's completely FREE!

It's my wee gift to all you lovely crocheters, and you can download it from Ravelry.

Does anyone else have this problem with traditional triangular shawls? 😂

Every time I wore one outdoors, the ends would somehow end up underneath me, dragging through wet grass or getting caught on whatever I was sitting on. Drove me daft!

So I thought, surely there must be a better way? So I designed one. Aha!

Lochside is a half-hexagon shawl, so you still get all the lovely warmth of a traditional shawl, just without loads of extra fabric getting in the way!

It's lightweight, sits nicely around your shoulders and is a lovely relaxing crochet project too, with simple stitches and an easy four-row repeat.

So if you're fed up of sitting on the ends of your shawl too, this might be the one for you! 😂

You can find Lochside over on my website.

A wee reminder about Lomond! ❤️

Inspired by the beautiful views across Loch Lomond from the pier at Rowardennan, Lomond is one of my Scottish-inspired mosaic crochet designs.

The pattern includes 16 different designs, with charts and written instructions to help you along the way.

I've crocheted my version using @yarnsmiths Create DK from @woolwarehouse and you'll find all the details of my colourway within the pattern if you fancy making one just like mine!

As always, both UK and US crochet terms are available.

If you've not come across Lomond before, pop over and have a wee look!

Has anyone made Lomond? I'd love to see your finished blankets and colour choices!

So, which of The Kelpies colourways is your favourite?

I genuinely can't decide! Haha.

And I'm curious, is anyone crocheting The Kelpies using a different colourway of Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze Prints DK?

I'd love to see what you've chosen! It's always amazing how different a design can look just by changing the colours.

If you're working on yours, please share some photos. I'd love a wee peek!

All of these colourways are available to purchase as yarn packs from @woolwarehouse

I think I've developed a bit of a love for reflections in my crochet designs!

It started with An Cala and I carried it through to The Kelpies. There's something I absolutely love about creating that mirrored effect, especially when the reflection is a wee bit distorted, just as it would be in water.

And I love how the pinks and reds look against that gorgeous deep blue.

I'm using @yarnsmiths Support Act, the blended one, for this version. It's a 4ply cotton / acrylic blend and it's buttery soft.

I don't think I'm quite finished playing with reflections yet!

The Kelpies pattern is available on Etsy, Ravelry and Wool Warehouse.

When I first picked up a crochet hook back in 2018, I was just looking for a new hobby. Never in a million years did I think it would turn into a business!

And it's not just about the crochet. It's the people I've met, the friendships I've made, the places I've been and the opportunities that have come along because of it.

All from deciding to try something new.

I think we sometimes forget just how much can come from giving something a go. You don't need to be good at it, you don't need to have a plan and it certainly doesn't need to turn into a business.

Sometimes it's just about trying something different and seeing where it takes you.

You never know what might come of it! 😁

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being inspired by other artists. We all are!

But there's a big difference between inspiration and copying someone else's work.

My new Kelpies crochet pattern is a perfect example. I was inspired by Andy Scott's magnificent sculptures in Falkirk and wanted to create my own interpretation of them in mosaic crochet.

But those sculptures are someone else's artwork, so I contacted Andy and his wife to ask permission before going ahead. Thankfully, they were happy for me to do so!

And that's the thing. Just because something inspires you doesn't automatically mean you're entitled to use it however you please.

Artists and designers put an enormous amount of time, effort and creativity into their work. Surely the least we can do is respect that?

Be inspired. Create your own things. Give credit where it's due and ask permission when it's needed.

There's plenty of room for us all to be creative without helping ourselves to someone else's hard work. ❤️ by @getyerhookon
