Redefining What Love Actually Is

At some point, healing requires you to ask an uncomfortable question:

What have I been calling love?

Because the answer to that question shapes everything, it shapes who you pursue and who you allow close. It shapes what you tolerate and what you excuse. It shapes whether you leave or stay, whether you speak up or keep quiet, whether you trust your instincts or override them.

If your definition of love includes confusion, you will normalise confusion. If your definition includes emotional instability, you will accept instability. If your definition includes being chosen only intermittently, only when it is convenient, you will learn to be grateful for the times you are chosen at all, instead of asking why consistency is not the baseline.

I had to sit down with my own definition. And I had to be honest about how much of it had been shaped by what I had received rather than by what was true.

Love is not anxiety. It is not the hot-and-cold rhythm that keeps you perpetually uncertain. It is not the version of you that is always working to keep the peace or earn your place.

Healthy love is intentional. It is steady. It does not require you to constantly re-audition for your own relationship.

God’s love is the clearest model we have of what love is actually supposed to look like. Let that love become the standard, not just spiritually, but practically, in what you expect from the people in your life.

Reflection: How have your past experiences shaped your working definition of love, and what parts of that definition may need to be rewritten?

Prayer:Lord, help me unlearn the definitions of love that have kept me in cycles of hurt. Align my understanding with Your truth. Help me know - really know - what love is supposed to feel like. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
