What may look like simple semicircular bunds is actually a carefully designed approach to restoring degraded land and making better use of every drop of rain.

As we prepare for the rains, including the possibility of El Niño conditions, semicircular bunds offer a practical way to slow down runoff, reduce erosion, and give rainwater more time to soak into the ground. This creates better conditions for soil recovery, vegetation growth, and groundwater recharge.

It is a simple intervention with a long term purpose: helping degraded landscapes become more productive, resilient, and capable of supporting life.

The Green Generation Initiative @ggi_kenya is implementing this restoration work through the Jumuiya Water Fund, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy Africa @nature_africa . Together with local communities, we are working to restore landscapes, strengthen water security, and create a future where both people and nature can prosper.

15 October | International Day of Rural Women

At Green Generation Initiative (GGI), we recognise the vital role rural women play in restoring landscapes, protecting ecosystems and building resilient communities.

In Makueni, GGI works with women to restore degraded land through water harvesting and soil conservation. By constructing half moon dunes also known as the semicircular bunds , these women help retain rainwater, reduce soil erosion and create conditions for vegetation to thrive.

In the Mau Forest, GGI is establishing a fruit tree nursery with a capacity of one million seedlings, supporting restoration efforts of the mau forest complex and creating opportunities to strengthen community livelihoods.

Along the Kenyan coast, GGI works with women in mangrove restoration, supporting efforts to protect these vital ecosystems, which sustain biodiversity, support livelihoods and strengthen coastal resilience.

Across these landscapes, GGI recognises that lasting conservation depends on community participation, local knowledge and the people who work every day to protect our natural environment.

This International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the women contributing to land restoration, forest regeneration and mangrove conservation. Their work reminds us that caring for nature also means supporting the people whose lives and livelihoods are connected to it.

At GGI, we believe that when we invest in people, we strengthen our efforts to restore nature. by @ggi_kenya

Conservation is for everyone, and you are never too young to make a difference!

Meet @ella_cheruto , a 9 year old young author who has written a book on conserving energy at home and at school. During Conservation Is Fun this Mazingira Day, Ella joined us in celebrating our planet and marked the occasion by planting a tree, ahead of her book launch on 17th October.

Go, Ella! We are cheering you on and celebrating your commitment to a greener future. Keep growing, keep inspiring, and keep making conservation fun!

Conservation Is Fun is more than an event. It is a movement and an experience by Green Generation Initiative @ggi_kenya that brings people together to connect with nature, learn about conservation and take meaningful action for our planet, all while having fun.

This Mazingira Day, we proudly hosted the second edition of Conservation Is Fun at Oloolua Forest, bringing together people from different walks of life to celebrate nature through tree planting, games, music, laughter and meaningful connections. Together, we planted 2,000 indigenous trees, proving that caring for our environment can be both impactful and enjoyable.

Our vision is to build a community where conservation becomes part of our everyday lives, where more people, especially young people, feel inspired to protect nature and where every action, big or small, contributes to a greener future.

The second edition was another step towards that vision, and we are only getting started.

Stay on the lookout for the next edition of @conservationisfun . More trees, more connections and more fun coming your way! by @ggi_kenya

This Mazingira Day, at the Green Generation Initiative (GGI), we chose to celebrate nature the @conservationisfun way!

At Oloolua Forest, Turaco Camp, we brought people together to mark Mazingira Day through tree planting, learning, connection, and plenty of FUN. With 2,000 trees to plant, the day was a powerful reminder that protecting our environment starts with the actions we take together.

From the smiles and teamwork to the hands in the soil, every moment reflected one shared commitment: creating a greener future for generations to come.

Here is a look back at the moments that made our Mazingira Day celebration special and FUN.

Mazingira Day is more than a celebration. It is a call to action. And conservation is always more fun when we do it together.
