Before the beat, there is the story.

This weekend, the streets of Notting Hill will become one of the biggest celebrations of Caribbean culture in the world.

But Carnival isn’t only about the costumes, sound systems and extraordinary energy we see on the streets.

Places like The Tabernacle are part of its cultural heartbeat.

For decades, this building has been a home for arts, community and Caribbean culture in Notting Hill — a place closely connected with Carnival and the people who have shaped it.

I took this photograph before the crowds arrive. Before the music gets louder. Before these streets become almost unrecognisable.

And perhaps that’s why I like it.

Carnival doesn’t simply arrive in Notting Hill for a weekend. Its story lives here all year round.

A week before Carnival and the streets have a completely different rhythm.

Colour, Cafes, markets, fabulous cars, unexpected characters and those little corners you normally walk straight past.

Just me and my camera wondering around before Notting Hill turns the volume All the way up.
