Monday, I found this picture from a few years back and the timing is perfect. Wifey and I are both big #Dolly fans. For me, growing up in Rockford, listening to Dolly sounded like she was talking about the people in my neighborhood and even some of the heartbreak I experienced firsthand. There are plenty of people who are posting about her compassion, but it amuses me when people say "she wasn't political." Did they not listen to her lyrics? She made it clear she believed that Black, Caucasian, straight, and gay people all deserved #equalrights She championed education and #earlyliteracy She advocated for and FUNDED healthcare. These are all issues of social policy. Our society has become so attached to bandwagons that when someone avoids charged buzzwords, aligning with cults of personality, and belittling those who contradict her beliefs, journalists label her "apolitical." Dolly was VERY political on and off stage, she just understood the importance of leading by example instead of succumbing to neo-tribalism. As a #lyricist she was every bit as socially conscious as Chuck D, Springsteen, and J Cole. Her pencil was just as mighty as theirs, the only difference is hers was an eyeliner pencil (another reason I can relate to her).
