California loses tens of thousands of acres of grasslands to wildfires each year, but could grazing cattle help reduce some of that risk? 🔥 A study co-authored by UC Davis researchers found that cattle can help remove vegetation that would otherwise become wildfire fuel. When researchers compared methane emissions alone, having cattle graze the vegetation resulted in lower emissions than allowing that same vegetation to burn. 🐂 Grazing isn’t a solution to wildfires, but it may be one more way cattle contribute to California’s landscape, while also supporting a sustainable food system. Yesterday, our Director, Dr. Frank Mitloehner delivered a presentation at the Perdue Farms 11th Annual Animal Care and Sustainability Summit in Salisbury, MD. He addressed the environmental impacts of livestock production and emphasized the importance of doing good work and talking about it. With Perdue recognized as a leader in sustainable production, their program brought together a diverse group that was interested in topics including animal care, sustainable pork and beef production, and global health challenges. #Livestock #Sustainability #AnimalAgriculture @ghgguru @perduefarms @ucdaviscaes @ucdavisans by @ghgguru

We had an incredible turnout at the 2026 Salute to Ag Football Game – 11,000 attendees to be exact! Seeing our communities come together to celebrate farmers, ranchers and agriculture was truly remarkable. From the research and innovation happening right here on campus, to new initiatives across California, there’s so much happening in agriculture that deserves attention. 🌾 Recap video with special appearances from: Dean Stokes Ashley at UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Dr. Frank Mitloehner at UC Davis CLEAR Center Efrain Valenzuela, Director of Dairy Ag Education at the Dairy Council of California Haven Kiers, Associate Professor at UC Davis and who leads the Sheepmowers Katie Roberti, Director of Communications at the California Cattlemen’s Association Annabelle Steel, student at UC Davis Lisa Nash Holmes, Teaching Coordinator in the Animal Science Department Thank you again to everyone who participated and made this an unforgettable event! by @ghgguru
Following the premiere of Alltech’s documentary, “World Without Cows” in New York City, Dr. Frank Mitloehner joined filmmakers and producers, Michelle Michael, Brandon Whitworth, Josh Tickell and President and CEO at Alltech, Mark Lyons for a panel discussion about the film. The discussion was an opportunity to dig deeper into the questions at the heart of the film, and why conversations about the role of livestock in our food system, the environment, and building a more sustainable future are so important. These are conversations worth continuing. #WorldWithoutCows @worldwithoutcows @ghgguru @markplyons17 @alltechinc by @ghgguru
As Alltech’s documentary, “World Without Cows” makes its premiere in New York, we’re proud to see our Director, Dr. Frank Mitloehner and Deputy Director, Joe Proudman show up for the occasion. With Dr. Mitloehner lending his expertise in livestock sustainability in a segment of the film, it’s exciting to see the story reach audiences far beyond agriculture. | @ghgguru @alltechinc @thelyonstale @worldwithoutcows 🌍 🐄 🐂 by @ghgguru
We’re firm believers in hands-on learning, and that philosophy is reflected in the many livestock sustainability research studies led by our team of knowledgeable CLEAR Center graduate students. But hands-on learning extends beyond the research itself. It’s also about learning from the faculty and mentors here at @ucdaviscaes who have dedicated their careers to developing the next generation of animal scientists. That commitment to mentorship and experiential learning is exemplified throughout the ANS Department. In our new episode of the CLEAR Conversations Podcast, we hear from our host, Tracy Sellers and Lisa Holmes, Teaching Coordinator at UC Davis in the Animal Science Department, who has spent over 30 years mentoring students, managing animal science teaching facilities and supervising staff within the student advising center.🎙️ ▶️ Tune in: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MxLrsbIVwBQ&ra=m 🎧 Stream it on all major platforms: https://ucdavisclearcenter.podbean.com/ 📝 Read the recap: https://clear.ucdavis.edu/news/clear-conversations-lisa-nash-holmes-reflects-decades-service-uc-davis-agriculture by @ghgguru

Our very first early-life intervention study is wrapping up and with it, 14 months of research that could help shape more practical approaches to reducing methane emissions in cattle. Every single day, our team has shown up for early mornings, long days, and countless moments that made this study possible. We’ve cared for these animals from the day they were born, collecting rumen samples and enteric methane data along the way. Within the first 100 days of life, each calf received a feed additive so we could study its effects on methane emissions, animal performance, and the rumen microbial population. Why does this matter? Because solutions need to work in real-world applications. For cattle ranchers, especially those who may go for extended periods without seeing their herd, there’s value in approaches that can be incorporated early in an animal’s life and have lasting effects. This study gave our team the opportunity to explore that possibility firsthand and to keep building the science behind practical solutions for the cattle industry. It’s been a long road, and one we’re incredibly proud to have traveled alongside an incredible team. Now, we’re crossing the finish line together and looking ahead to what we can learn from it. Thank you to the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Office of Environmental Farming and Innovation’s Livestock Enteric Methane Emission Reduction Research Program (LEMER-RP) for funding this project. by @ghgguru
Good news! 🚨 Complete playlist from the 2026 State of the Science Summit: Reducing Methane from Animal Agriculture is now available. Missed a session or want to revisit a conversation? Watch now on the UC Davis CLEAR Center YouTube. Thank you to everyone who participated in our speaker panels and helped make these conversations so meaningful. We’re grateful to all of our speakers, panelists, moderators and attendees for being part of the conversation and helping advance the dialogue around methane mitigation and livestock sustainability. And of course, to our co-hosts and contributing sponsors: Spark Climate Solutions, UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, California Department of Food and Agriculture, Global Methane Hub and The Platform for Agriculture and Climate Transformation, whose generosity and support have made this event possible. #LivestockMethaneSummit 🐄 🐂 View playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLN_OxjwNd79Y ▶️🔗🔝 by @ghgguru
It was our privilege to welcome the Minnesota Pork Leadership Cohort to the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. 🐷 Under the guidance of Swine Barn Manager, Shelby Sopocy, the group toured the Animal Science Swine Research, Teaching and Outreach Center, where swine are bred and cared for in-house for teaching and research purposes. It was great to see the level of engagement and active participation from the group, especially their focus on effective public-facing communications, a discussion led by our Director and recently appointed Chair of the Animal Science Department at @ucdaviscaes, Dr. Frank Mitloehner. 👏 This visit highlights the importance of trust and transparency in advancing the pork industry. We value the opportunity to engage with groups dedicated to shaping the future of sustainable pork production. Many thanks to those who joined us for an eventful day at UC Davis! @minnesotapork @ucdaviscaes @ucdavisswine @ucdaviscaes @ghgguru by @ghgguru
One of the most valuable meetings I’ve attended this year. The North American Grazing Lands Congress brought together everyone - from ranchers to UN FAO - to discuss the future of grazing lands & livestock production. Best ideas emerge when science meets practical experience. by @ghgguru
