Dad,

It’s me, your baby girl.

For so long, I’ve carried anger in my heart because I was robbed of your time, your presence, and the chance to know you the way a daughter should know her father. There have been so many moments I wished you were here for—the big ones and the small ones.

But what brings me peace is when I meet people who knew you. They’ll stop me and say, “You look just like your father,” and then they share stories about you. They tell me how much you would have loved me, how proud you would have been, and for a moment, I get a glimpse of the man I never got enough time with.

Today, I’m standing here with your legacy—your grandchildren—and with my husband. It’s a bittersweet feeling. I wish you could have met them yourself.

I especially wish you could have met the man God brought into my life. A man who loves me deeply, protects me fiercely, and supports me through every season. Sometimes I wonder if he was one of God’s gifts from you—a reminder that even though you couldn’t stay, I would still be loved the way a daughter deserves to be loved.

Your grandson carries a smile that would have made you proud. Your granddaughter has a light that would have wrapped you around her little finger. They know about you, Dad. They know your name. They know they come from you.

I still miss what we never got to have. I still grieve the memories we never got to make. But standing here today, I realize that while your life was cut short, your legacy wasn’t.

You live on through me.

Through my strength.
Through my love.
Through my family.

And no matter how many years pass, I will always be your baby girl.
