Yesterday was an exciting day for The Green Howards Museum. The museum welcomed the lovely ladies from the Richmond WI and the local community to our Richmond Remembers session where they knit and crocheted poppies to turn Richmond red for Remembrance. Tony from the Yorkshire Post also came along to take some pictures and interview the ladies.

The Green Howards Museum are very grateful to all of those who have donated their time and effort to this important project.

We cannot wait to see Richmond covered in poppies

If you want to get involved come along to the next session or drop off your poppies at The Green Howards Museum.

The Green Howards Museum is open Monday-Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm.

The military, including the Green Howards, have a deep connection to horses.

Horses have been used in rapid cavalry attacks and to transport goods in difficult terrain.

Despite the Green Howards being an infantry regiment, meaning they fought on foot, they used horses in battle during the Boer War. In response to Boer tactics, they formed a Mounted Infantry battalion. This allowed them to effectively chase Boers and protect key supply lines.

This Green Howards Museum still has a connection to horses today. You can find us at Sedgefield Racecourse tomorrow for the Durham National. If you haven't booked your ticket already, book it on Sedgefield Racecourse's website: https://www.sedgefield-racecourse.co.uk/.

It is always humbling when one of our own, missing for over 100 years, is found and given a final resting place among his comrades.

This week the remains of Lance-Corporal Claude Stanley Dell were laid to rest in Poelcapelle British Cemetery accompanied by a party from 2nd Battalion of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

Claude was found just outside the town of Sint Juliaan in the Langemarck-Poelcapkapelle area of Belgium in June 2021, and work by the Joint Casualty & Compassionate Centre of the MoD and the Flanders Heritage Agency helped identify him.

Claud was living in Scarborough when war broke out, though the family hailed from the London area. He was one of five brothers to serve during the Great War. We will remember them. by @ghmuseum

For today's Fun Fact Friday, Steve has covered the war that started because of an ear: the War of Jenkin's Ear.

In 1731, Robert Jenkins had his ear chopped off by Spanish coast guards looking for contraband.

This was used by the British to start a war that lasted nine years!

Want to impress your friends with some fun facts? Make sure to follow The Green Howards Museum.

The Green Howards Museum is open Monday-Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm.

Did you know women also received medals for their actions during WW1?

In our medals room, we have the medals that were awarded to Mary Devas Marshall. Marshall joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry in 1912 and served in France as a motor driver.

Marshall and her colleagues received the military medal for their actions on 23rd September 1918. She attended a fire at an ammunition dump in Marquise which was being attacked by German aircraft. With her colleagues, she displayed immense courage by taking the soldiers who had been working at the dump to hospital.

Mary Marshall received a total of six medals during the Great War.

Her husband, William Dale Wilkinson, was a Green Howards and only agreed to donate his medals if those of his wife were put on display too.

If you would like to see the couple's medals, visit The Green Howards Museum Monday-Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm.

HE-HAW! he-haw! he-haw!

Have you ever wondered what life in the Green Howards looked like through a donkey's eyes?

Meet Anthony the Donkey.

Stationed in India in the early 1900s as part of the 2nd Battalion, Anthony reported his experiences in the Green Howards Gazette. His humorous accounts include his failed advances towards a female donkey who kicked him in the jaw bone and recollections of soldiers' activities.

A stalwart of the battalion, he participated in parades and marches and earned himself a reputation as a prankster: tugging men out of their beds, stealing food and soiling kit.

Loved by the entire battalion, his articles in the gazette came to an end in October 1901 when he died surrounded by his comrades. A soldier wrote in his obituary that the "men of the regiment will tell their children anecdotes of the pet donkey who was the admiration of all who beheld him."

Want to learn more about Anthony's regiment? Visit The Green Howards Museum Monday-Saturday between 10am and 4:30pm.
