Ghost Culture - Mouth [PH29]

“Mouth” is full of simple pleasures. The satisfying oomph of a well-rounded bass synth; the delicious crispness of a well-tempered machine clap—and supple nuance. The nervous spring reverb that accompanies his keyboard trills is a small detail, but it amps up the music’s quiet, visceral thrill; it adds depth to the song’s ample negative spaces. The principal synth riff rolls like a fistful of agates, and everything sounds as polished as a bauble in a raccoon’s paws.” As Pitchfork understood in their review, ‘Mouth’ is in a lane of its own.

Originally released in October 2013 as the title track of Ghost Culture’s debut EP, Resident Advisor described the record as being both “lush and expensive, with just a hint of Depeche Mode-esque sleaze—and a comparable knack for a hook.”

Fast forward two years, and ‘Mouth’ is the opening track of Ghost Culture’s eponymous debut album, before being remixed by Running Back’s Gerd Janson and Shan. Thirteen years on, and Mouth’s mystical power is still untainted.

To celebrate, a limited number of copies of the Ghost Culture Album have now been restocked onto our Bandcamp. Act quick, these will move fast.

“Gleefully deceiving the listener with its slow-burning opening moments, it soon opens out into something resembling an updated take on Depeche Mode, with three additional decades worth of technological advancement along for the ride. To call it ‘spacious’ would be underselling its cavernous sound - you’ll be picking it apart for days.” - Drowned In Sound by @ghostculture

NEW SERIES, record chat.
Daniel Avery, ‘Drone Logic’
Made sometime in 2011, came about soon after I had bought my first proper synth: the Korg Mono/Poly and the Doepfer Dark Time sequencer to go with it. Both had a mind of their own, and contribute to the wonky and ‘wrong’ notes on the record.
I was obsessed with throwing cv to the filter instead of the pitch, making the resonance jump around.
@danielmarkavery had the clear vision for this and the rest that followed on his debut. I didn’t know what I was doing, but perhaps that naivety plus the strong vision of pthe artist, magic occurred?
Mixed by master @erolalkan, nothing could have finessed it better.
