With their roots embedded in a rich history of great artistry and storytelling, indigenous women in the tattoo industry have since reclaimed the sacred art form of tattooing and with it designs that have been of great significance to indigenous cultures throughout history. Sacred Ink showcases indigenous tattoo artist Missy Mahan, whose work centers tattoos affiliated with her traditional Tohono O’odham and Yuchi tribal designs whilst highlighting the importance of tattoos as a source of cultural preservation and identity.

I created Sacred Ink with the hopes of bringing forth the voices of indigenous matriarchs who are utilizing contemporary art methods to revitalize and reclaim our cultural identity and history. I look forward to expanding this project within the coming years and am incredibly grateful for those who supported me while making this 🖤🪶🎬 by @ghostinthefruitcake

Some behind the scenes photos of our latest project in collaboration with @newmexicoclay 💫

I wanted to highlight the incredible crew I have working alongside me for this next short documentary. It was because of them we had such a fun smooth first day of filming and I can’t wait to pick up production again 🎬

More photos to come but no spoilers 🤫✨

I had such a great time presenting my short documentary Sacred Ink at the Native Lens symposium in Durango this past weekend! My heart and brain are so full of knowledge and gratitude after this experience. I always love working with the @native_lens_ team and can’t wait to see how much Native film will grow in the future

Words cannot describe my gratitude and love for the @durangoindependentfilm and @native_lens_
I made so many new incredible connections and memories with the Durango community and filmmakers. I was also given the opportunity to represent myself and Native filmmakers with a panel and Q&A and had an absolute blast doing so.

The @durangoindependentfilm crew welcomed me with open arms for my very first festival and I can’t wait to go back and bring more of my own community along with me. As always thank you to my crew and talent who helped me achieve my creative vision and for showing up for me, and of course to @alexmatthewssculpture for keeping me encouraged to keep doing what I do 💞🎬 by @ghostinthefruitcake

A simple edit before the year ends, sometimes it’s nice to get out of the hometown and see some different architecture 🏰🌌

“No man knows till he experiences it, what it is like to feel his own life-blood drawn away into the woman he loves.”
-Bram Stokers Dracula

During the summer solstice celebration at @thecrowsnestoddities we were lucky to find the fantastic photography work of @rjgibsonphotographer and had a few Tin Type photos taken (which we found out these were the photos of the 1830’s-1870’s). “The count and the countess.”
