Today I turned 29. In just a blink of an eye a temporary job became an eight year career I never intended. Iโ€™ve spent my entire twenties as a crew member for someone elseโ€™s dream, and I donโ€™t know when I gave up on myself. When I first got into the industry as a PA, I was so excited to be a part of everything. I turned to whatever department would take me next, which happened to be camera. The end goal was always to direct. Somewhere along the way I got embarrassed. Directing is what everyone aspires to do, and I was so caught up with what people might think of me for wanting it I didnโ€™t even try. My mindset shifted from making art to making money. Enough to survive, then enough for a house, then a mortgage, then retirement. I never want to even think about the words Roth IRA again. I became obsessed with finding work and terrified when it dried up. All the while I was destroying my body for a job that was only supposed to be temporary. In this photo is everything Iโ€™ve drawn, written, and thought of for the last 8 years. Fifteen features, six seasons of a TV show, a miniseries, several short films, a book, over a hundred animated characters, countless short stories. All of it living inside notebooks and computers. I worry that before I know it Iโ€™ll be too old, and Iโ€™ll die, and no one will ever know what was inside my head. *insert midwestern emo lyric* All that being said. I love being a camera assistant, but Iโ€™m ready to try. The next movie that makes me cry will be my own. ๐Ÿ“ธ: @yoshisteadiop & @alexpurifoy by @gianna.llew

No place to camera test your Bolex for the first time like Antarctica. And no test is complete without a variety of different 16mm short ends that you kept next to a heater for 2 years then in a fridge for the next four, avoiding 5 airport x rays but succumbing to 4, and forgetting to bring a light meter.
