"As if everything was perfect," directed and choreographed by Gianna Burright and commissioned by Baryshnikov Arts Center, receives its world premiere as part of our Fall 2026 season!

Combining humor, surreal imagery, and sharp physicality, three women move through memories, fantasies, and imagined futures, navigating responsibility, guilt, and self-compassion. An original score by Shio Tepper will be performed live.

Episode No. 2 features MADCO guest choreographer Gianna Burright alongside MADCO’s artistic director Arianna Russ. Carly Vanderheyden and Soraya Cohen pull back the curtain on Gianna’s process of creating “Oddities” for its Spring 2026 premiere, as well as the expansion of the work for MADCO’s 2026-2027 Season. Gianna Burright is a Choreographer, Dancer, and Educator, who explores emotional extremes—happiness and sadness, grief and euphoria, rage and mindfulness, nightmares and dreams—through movement. A self-proclaimed late bloomer she has had the opportunity to work with acclaimed organizations such as Baryshnikov Arts, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Create Summer Program, Jacob’s Pillow Ann and Westin Hicks Choreography Fellow, Kennesaw State University Choreographic Residency, Carmel Dance Festival Choreography Fellow, Dance Gallery Festival Ardsley Residency. Gianna has presented choreographic work in fifteen countries including at iconic venues such as The Bonnie Byrd Theater, The Place, Turner Contemporary Gallery, Waterloo East Theatre, STEPS, Opendoors North America, the International Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Odyssey Theater, LA Theatre Center, and LA Dance Project. This year Gianna is commissioned by Baryshnikov Arts to develop her evening-length work, As if everything was perfect and received a commission from MADCO to develop a new work Oddities. She has been mentored by some of the most acclaimed figures in the world of dance including Jojo Alsberry, Lillian Barbeito, Peter Chu, Alex Ketley, Dianne McIntyre, and Risa Steinberg.

Gianna is an educator who works with dancers and movers of all ages and abilities, including in K-12 school systems and university settings. She aims to create understanding through sensory experiences, articulation & vocabulary (verbally & physically), awareness, joy, sadness, connection, and listening. Burright holds a BFA in Dance from UCSB and an MFA in Choreography from Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance
