So I’ve been living in Costa Rica for the past two weeks doing sea turtle conservation and research 🇨🇷🌴🐢🌊🥭

I’ve been out so far out of my comfort zone, living in a foreign country where the language is unknown to me, and I didn’t know anyone coming into the experience.

The opportunity to work and study in Ostional has been so incredible. From learning to make jewelry out of coconuts, to learning how to lasso, getting smoothies with the crew everyday, making homemade tortillas, having the local kids teach me Spanish while I teach them English, meeting all the stray animals, and much more, I have had the best, most educational opportunity of my life.

Our turtle research is ongoing research, helping collect data on turtle nesting and hatching patterns. We are aiding in conservation of the Olive Ridley sea turtle species and educating/ learning from the community and leaders on a healthy turtle ecosystem (shout out @kimbocamarena ) Ostional inhibits Olive Ridley sea turtles and here, Arribadas occur which are where hundreds of thousands of Olive Ridleys emerge all at once from the ocean to lay eggs over a few days. The Ostional National Wildlife refuge is one of the world’s most important nesting sites of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle! It’s been a privilege to be able to be working here.

We participated in daily lectures on these amazing creatures and these mass nestings, helped build a hatchery, beach cleaned, and at night we beach patrolled, collecting data on active nests and mama laying their eggs.

I have such a passion for sea turtles and this experience solidified me in my desire to work in conservation. I am forever grateful for this opportunity to grow not only my knowledge of marine life and conservation but, to grow as an overall individual. Costa Rica was a lit place to go out of the country for the first time too.

A bonus were the people I met during this project! Forever grateful for my new best friends and for this group of beautiful humans!
