Wither And Bloom
Graphite 11"x14"

After a bit of a pause on posting I'm back with another piece. I seem to have really developed an affinity for illustraing rabbits the past few years 😄🐇. They seem really connected to mythical forces and folklore. This is a concept that ties into the world of the plant and earth sprites I have been working on this year.  Many animals who have gained the gift of knowing are well aware of the cycle that occurs within the planet. But some animals see things differently than the sprites that toil away, ensuring the cycle of Bloom And Decay continues as it has been designed.

Do you ever notice the faces in the forest? Walking among the old trees you may see a presence that is still but listening to every footstep. A network of trees and plants communicating in a language we can't hear.

Grounding Ritual
An open ended piece with no explicit story, just wanting to capture a mood and feeling. A bit of a departure from my other recent water color pieces as I used mixed media and digital, since I couldn't quite capture what I had in mind with just watercolor for this one.

A Hedge Dwelling

Deep in the thicket of the wild Hedges, past the bramble and brush, many creatures make their home for a season. While some birds and other small animals search for a burrow or crevice to make their home, the Hedgelings have created more permanent dwellings. Crafted in ancient trees, or mounds, the hedge dwellings would go unnoticed by most humans who are not really looking. A doorway so small that most do not even give it a second glance.

The Sage in the thicket

With a crown for a fool, the old sage Odis sat in his thicket. Watching the daily occurrences in the hedges, he rarely spared any passerby his observations and helpful advice. Some would hurry past with a barely concealed look of pity or bewilderment. “The southern passage needs a strong hand to mend the broken shrubbery, and you seem to be in need of something to do today!” He croaked at the Hedgeling that scurried away. “Living with the hares, what an odd sight indeed!” He shouted at Badger who was in fact the only badger who lived in the hedges.

The Rootling he sat upon smiled as she found him amusing and knew he meant well. She glowed faintly as she listened and didn’t judge. Rowena, a rootling of many cycles, remembered well many generations of hedgefolk and sprites. She was quite welcoming of small animals and Hedgelings that would come to share stories and sit for a while. While rootlings don’t often speak or leave their mounds, they will at times give words of encouragement passed down from ancestors long gone.

Most animals who had gained the sense of knowing didn’t like to draw attention to themselves with human like adornments. But Odis, the old toad sage, had somehow gotten the idea  for a crown from barely remembered stories and sayings left by humans who passed through the hedges. Perhaps these delirious travelers mentioned something about cursed kings and fae creatures, as they could have sworn the animals here had a strange look and stared at them intently.

The Carrion Hound

It circled the bones and decaying matter, relishing in the residual bonds that bound the living to the waking world. This was a sight not many mortals nor sprites would ever see;  a spectral creature of ash and rot. Though it appeared as a dark hound of monstrous proportions, its body seemed to ripple and shift as though it couldn’t decide on what form to take. Scales, roots, bones, and feathers protruded from its dark rotted frame, as the carrion specter devoured the remains.

If anyone could witness this putrid sight, they would surely be confused, as the creature seemed to devour then release the remains back to the forest floor. But it had indeed left its mark on the remains, ensuring that the dead matter would not infect the living.

Something intangible had been consumed, as the spectre carried out its duty, removing the pain and despair that seemed to linger where death had been present. It left its mark on the spot as a place where rot and decay would take over, making way for a renewal.

Now the cycle could commence, as lichen and other fungi would carry out their tasks to repurpose the dead matter into nutrients for new growth.

Messenger of the spore

Urmi was still a young Hedgeling, so she was taken aback by the appearance of a small Lichen and another sprite she had never seen.  This strange sprite with the same white pupils as the Lichen, seemed to glide forward rather than walk which only added to its unsettling presence. With a melodious voice that rang like many whispering reeds in the wind, it announced itself. “We have come together as need dictates, with many voices united as the Sil'Sporaeth, a Messenger of the spore, and advocate of the Lichen.”

Urmi was unsure what that meant, but something about the Lichen’s seemingly rare presence lately was concerning to many of the Hedgefolk.

“Well I think mother Yandel is who you will need to speak with” Urmi said with a small but resolute voice.  The Messenger motioned with its arm indicating for Urmi to lead the way.

The forest remembers every footstep and passing, and moments too still for humans to see. And on the forest floor the Archivists of the Mycelium Counsel retain memories of death and transformation, and new beginnings. In the Green Tongue they are known as the Leth’Zuunari.  While most of the Mycelium Counsel remains rooted to their domain, Leth’Zuunari travel along the green pathways, to maintain a memory of any new events that could affect their colonies. Friendly to most, these Archivists actively speak with the other beings of the hedge and the verdant lands, as they seek out any knowledge that could be of importance to the Mycelium Counsel.

The Lichen Folk

Small and silent they carried on with their duties, tending to the rocks and roots. Even among the other forest sprites, the Lichen were a true curiosity. With nimble hands they sifted through the decay and rot, restoring balance to the air and soil.  The miasmic air swirled in dark purple and blue wisps, as they delicately transformed the nitrogen into nourishment for new life.

Lately, many of the Hedge Folk had noticed that Lichen were not tending as readily to their duties. Or perhaps something was affecting their colonies. It’s true that Lichen are delicate creatures, but this scarcity in their population seemed to indicate some other force at play.

Geneva, a curious magpie, looked on in wonder as these small creatures tended to their daily tasks. A bit of a busybody, Geneva had also been curious as to the rare sighting of any Lichen in her small area that bordered the Hedge and the outer world. As most of the smaller Lichen don’t communicate with any outside of their colony, Geneva would not be able to get any real information from these two workers.

Renessy scurried along the gnarled branches of an ancient tree stump looking for signs of any mushroom to use in her potions. She had been looking to trade with the Lichen folk, but strangely hadn’t come across any fungal spore for some time. Her senses picked up a strange odor in the air. The smell of withering plant life was unimstakable. And there it was on the other side of the ancient dead tree, a point of decay. Like a cancerous growth, tubular tendrils and untamed organic structures were encroaching on the healthy plants, spreading along with it a miasmic essence in the air. The abscence of any Lichen folk this deep into the old woods signaled a deeper problem. If the Lichen did not tend to their duties the decay could spread quickly. She needed to alert the other Hedge folk to stay clear.
