Join us this Saturday October 31 at 2PM to hear from Justin Devries @jrdev_ , a musician and historian, and Owen Underhill, a composer and conductor, as they discuss Martin Bartlett’s experimental work. The two will offer entry points for understanding Bartlett’s analogue synthesizers and graphic scoring techniques, as well as a social context for understanding the development of electro-acoustic music on the west coast from the late 1960s onwards. This gallery talk is free to attend. Click the link in our bio to find out more info. 📸 Martin Bartlett, page from the score of Pythagoras’ Ghost, 1990. • Quilting with the Land • I’m so excited to share about this wonderful collaborative art project with @gibson_sfu and students from University Highlands Elementary on Burnaby Mountain. Through eight sessions, sixty grade 4 and 5 students explored their relationship with each other and the land through natural fabric dyeing and flower pressing. I am honoured to have had a role as a mentor-artists alongside Maria Preoteasa @ufomaria, and elementary teachers Cara Taylor and Christine Yee. The project was organized by the Gibson’s Curator of Learning, Pietro Sammarco @pippo.sound I taught five workshops on various natural dye techniques including marigold, ice, indigo, rust, and bundle dyeing. These sessions created space for students to learn in relationship with plants, animals, and minerals, creating naturally dyed squares that were assembled into a community quilt. The project also included two workshops with Maria, where students composed pendants using pressed plants that they collect from the SFU Food Forest as a way of learning about the plants growing on Burnaby Mountain. Alongside the hands-on work, participants engaged in guided conversations about what decolonization means in their lives and how it can be practiced individually and collectively. The project will be displayed at the Gibson museum from December 5, 2026 - February 14, 2027. We are excited to launch Test Kitchen: Digressions next Wednesday at 12PM! Brenda Longfellow and Brenda Morrison of The Circle Project will be sharing their work in an informal public forum. All are welcome; brown bag lunch is encouraged. The Circle Project was created in 2019 by filmmaker Brenda Longfellow and restorative justice advocate Brenda Morrison, as an evolving collaboration of artists and people with lived experience of incarceration dedicated to producing provocative art together. We are inspired by Indigenous modalities of community-based justice and are committed to imagining alternatives to the violence and dehumanizations of carceral systems and logics. Broadly accessible online and disseminated through multiple platforms, our art projects use imagination, storytelling, performance, and play to generate rich and intimate encounters with the complex and layered experience of people with lived experience of incarceration. 📸 What Fools These Mortals Be (video still), a co-created video installation by The Circle Project by @gibson_sfu

Begin Anywhere explores the life and work of the late electro-acoustic composer and SFU professor Martin Bartlett (1939-1993). Bartlett’s groundbreaking practice made tremendous impacts in the fields of computer-performer interactivity, experimental tunings, and analogue and computer-driven synthesizer creation. Unlike that of his mentors and colleagues, however, Bartlett’s work remains largely unexamined. Martin Bartlett: Begin Anywhere is on now at the Gibson until February 14, 2027. 📸 all photos by @racheltophamphotography Slides 1-9: Installation view of Martin Bartlett: Begin Anywhere, Gibson Art Museum, October 3, 2026–February 14, 2027.
