“These are ceramic ocarinas that I gifted. They’re like flutes. The narwal I made for my brother because he asked for a narwal (the horn can be removed). For my Mom’s 50th birthday I made an owl, it suits her. For my partner I made a black panther, she’s from India, and where she lives is a jungle region with panthers and leopards. And for my old tap dance teacher, I made a tap shoe…I make a lot of gifts: wire animals and pop up cards, photos and embroidered jackets. When I was taking a ceramics class, I was making so many little things with the extra clay. I was working pretty fast so I had the extra time to personalize, I love to personalize.”

“My brother is one year younger than me, we’re super close and talk all the time. He’s getting to a place in his life that he really wants to be in, and he told me that he really wanted me to design his first tattoo, “whatever you make, I’ll like,” he said. He’s always been my rock. I’ve been in trouble, far away, and he’s driven like four states over to help me get some stuff done. He’s someone that you can always depend on, so making this for him, it just makes me happy. I asked for something to start with and he said a skeleton - on his forearm.”

“I made a key chain for my friend. We heard the song ‘Smooth Operator’ the night we met and now it always reminds me of them! I love making key chains for people because you can really personalize them. It’s handcrafted but not too difficult to make. It’s a simple way of showing someone that you’re thinking of them, that you admire them. I always add a real key at the end of the key chains I gift, sort of as a signature.”

“These are some jewelry pieces I’ve made using a bead collection that was gifted to me by my grandmother. Every time I come home, she’s always auctioning things off. I tell her, ‘I’ll take literally everything, anything that you have touched, please.’ She’s tried every art form possible, so she’s gifted me her set of oils, she’s gifted me a bunch of sewing stuff, beads, a bunch of art, a lot of crafty materials that she would have otherwise thrown away. Being able to utilize those to create new things for the people I love is really special. I never painted as kid, but now that I’m pursuing art, she’s been enjoying handing stuff down to me. A lot times when I travel I’ll bring back little things that I think she hasn’t seen before, but she’s seen the world…the thing I like most about gift-giving is being able to create something selflessly without any pressure or expectations. I take these opportunities to explore new mediums, it’s my excuse to pick up a new craft or a new hobby.”

“I made a rug for one of my good friends, Henry Weingartner [of @daundrylay ]. The idea was sparked by him joking that he’d love to have a rug with his face on it. The band is always joking about stuff and then actually making it come true, which is always fun, and I love to take people’s ideas and bring them to life. It’s now in his bathroom. At first I was like damn, mans put it in his bathroom, but actually that’s the perfect spot because anyone who comes over, they’re gonna sit there and look at it… It was my first time making a rug, so there was definitely some trial and error. I had a portrait of him that I had taken, and Henry Pearl and Sawyer [other members of the band] had a projector at their house that I used to trace the outline of his silhouette. Henry W. had just come out with his own solo album and there was this motif in the visuals of the album that’s this kind of mosaic of colors, so I brought that into the background of the portrait. I also built the frame and stretched the canvas…I definitely want to make more rugs for people, in the spirit of Gifted. The time and care put into making a rug is immense, and I think it’s a really meaningful gift to someone and something they’ll hopefully have forever.”

“I was in a college class where we had to develop film camera photos in a darkroom and the class made you buy extra materials in case you fucked up and exposed the pictures. I had a lot of photo paper and film left so I took a bunch of pics of my friends and developed them and then went and bought frames and gave them for Christmas. They liked the photos because it seemed like I cared a lot about them but in reality I just didn’t want to waste these materials because after the class I knew I would never be in a photo development room again. If you’re in a photo development room and you aren’t in college you either have a) rich parents or b) neck tattoos.”

“I sewed a canvas bag by hand for my best friend! While on an errand in the garment district, I found myself in awe of the endless trims, ribbons, and zippers when the idea came to me. I picked up charcoal gray canvas, a couple of trims to play with for the handles, zippers, and strong thread. I modeled the bag after one I had in my early teens that both of us loved. We’ve known each other since we were 13 and have gifted each other so much over the course of our friendship. Hand painted wooden boxes, tchotchkes, yummy candles, art materials, countless laughs. Holidays were coming up and I wanted to give something that was made with a function in mind and with love of course. It inspired me to create a few more since I enjoyed the process so much.”

“I knitted a sweater for my dog Inky because he’s so cute and I love him so much. Sometimes I knit or crochet something without the intention of giving it to him. But usually anything soft and large that I’m making on my lap becomes his because he’ll want to sit on it. He’s not a particularly cuddly dog so when he sits on a blanket that I’m making, I just want to give it to him. When I made him this sweater and put it on him for the first time, he kind of just stood still. I think the feeling of being wrapped in it makes him feel calm especially when he hears rain outside (he’s scared of the sound of rain). To pick the right size in the knit pattern, I measured his chest and neck circumference, and as I went on I periodically got him to try it on. I wonder sometimes if he knows I’m making something just for him. And sometimes I wonder if he thinks everything in the house is made for him. Whatever he thinks, Inky gives me and my partner unconditional love in the most sweetest and gentle way. Just his presence alone is a gift.”

“This is a CNC carved block of Cocobolo wood that is inscribed with the words, “The Good Feeling.” One of my best friend groups has used this title for our groupchat and more as we think the most important thing in life is to go after “The Good Feeling”, the thing that you find most fulfilling in your life. I made 4 blocks and gave 3 to friends in the chat and one to myself.”

“My gift is a small wooden lamp with a capiz shade. I had made the first version of this light a couple hours before a christmas white-elephant party. Haha, it’s become one of my most cherished memories now: watching my friends clamor and battle for my gift. Eventually my friend James won the light, but he generously gave it to another friend who was sorely butt-hurt. I made another version for James for being such a good sport…When I was younger I made a lot of mixtapes. Recently though, I’ve been gifting lamps to my friends. I really enjoy this because it eliminates this standard of perfection that I try to hold for client-work. Gifting creates an avenue to explore more adventurous ideas and if something eventually malfunctions, i’ll always be in touch to fix it later.”

“My gift is a collection of fly fishing flies I made for my wife. Fly fishing is one of our favorite things to do together and has always been a source of adventure, reflection, and refreshment for us. I started tying flies a few years ago and quickly became obsessed.. In many ways I see it as a craft that balances out my painting—small, delicate, and repetitive movements rather than big gestural ones. It’s also refreshing to make something that is meant to be used, something that is meant to be beat up and ultimately lost or used until it is no longer recognizable.. Sometimes as artists I think we get a little too hung up on the permanence of what we make. It feels good to make and give away something that I know won’t last forever, but instead will be put to use to create a fulfilling experience.”
