My Favorite Harajuku Portraits of 2025⭐️ I'm still looking for more portrait subjects for my personal project on Harajuku fashion so DM me if you are interested in creating art with me. 😊2025 was an extraordinary year of portraits for me, highlighted by Japanese Harajuku fashion portraits. What started on the streets of DTLA as a chance encounter with an 'interesting stranger' who was walking to a Japanese metal rock concert turned into a fascination and obsession with Harajuku fashion portraits.A big thank you to ALL my portrait subjects for trusting a stranger and for your collaboration in helping me to create this art. Your creativity and self expression are what make these portraits so special. With over 300 Harajuku portraits it was excruciating to narrow it down to nine, at times feeling like I was having to choose which fingers to cut off. 😮And a special thank you to @harajukudayla and @creepydollzmarket that organize the J-fashion markets in Little Tokyo Galleria... not only have you created opportunities for local artists to vend their art, but you have set up an environment where those with a love of Harajuku fashion can express themselves freely in an open and encouraging community. 💝Portraits taken at Harajuku Day, Creepy Dollz Market, Kamijo concert and Dir En Grey concerts.Swipe to see each portrait individually. AnnaWe met at a concert by Kamijo @kamijoofficial, a Japanese metal rock vocalist who incorporates vampire elements in his work.“I grew up in many different places! From K-12 grade I went to over 15 different schools, it helped me be more comfortable making friends and talking to strangers though! Right now I’m in Southern California~ I’m a business analyst / data engineer. It’s a career field I fell into, I didn’t go to school for it. I love sewing and fashion! I currently stream lots as a vtuber, but the name of that vtuber is a secret!“I found out about jfashion when I was in middle school.. so approaching 20 years. I found it through people uploading FRUITS magazine online. I started out being into Decora fashion, I tried out gothic Lolita, but visual kei is where I feel most comfortable. I also tried Jirai for a few years. I love frills and lace, but I think studs and leather suit me best? ✨🤭 The community, from what I have experienced of it, for the most part is nice. I would say just do what makes you happy. Some people are very strict on what classifies fashion, but making it your own and expressing yourself is what it’s all about at the end of the day!“This outfit was something I put together kinda haphazardly. I wanted to wear something comfortable for the hot weather but still cool! I really like this outfit! The big ribbons on the top are my favorite part. It mixes cute and cool perfectly. Hat and shoes are REFELM, top is TRAVAS TOKYO, and the skirt is ACDC RAG.”#gilbertyuphotography #streetportrait #japanesefashion #portrait #Harajuku by @gilbertyu

ZuWe met at a concert by Kamijo @kamijoofficial, a Japanese metal rock vocalist who incorporates vampire elements in his work.“I grew up and Pomona and have lived there all my life! I have always been into the arts and have been drawing since I was young. As of now I am self employed and I am focused on improving my skills and creating more art. I occasionally table at conventions and hope to table at more in the future! :D“For the Kamijo concert I knew I wanted to wear gothic lolita and decided on a full Moitie coord for the event! I felt it was fitting especially since Mana and Kamijo go way back! In general I also just love black and gravitate towards gothic coords in general~ It was very warm that day but worth toughing out as I feel most comfortable and like my true self when wearing Lolita :) Everyone was dressed amazing for the event!”#gilbertyuphotography #streetportrait #japanesefashion #portrait #Harajuku by @gilbertyu

VivienneWe met at a concert by Kamijo @kamijoofficial, a Japanese metal rock vocalist who incorporates vampire elements in his work.“I currently work from home as a video editor. Outside of work, music is one of my biggest passions. I'm a bassist and singer, and a lot of my inspiration comes from goth rock and visual kei. KAMIJO and Versailles were some of the artists that inspired me to pick up the bass and develop my singing, and they've had a huge influence on my love of music and on my creative journey.“My style naturally leans toward gothic fashion, so I knew I wanted to embrace that and create a look with an almost vampiric aesthetic. Gothic and visual kei fashion have always resonated with me because they allow me to express myself creatively without feeling like I have to fit into someone else's expectations. When I wear them, I feel confident, comfortable, and most importantly, like I'm truly myself.”#gilbertyuphotography #streetportrait #japanesefashion #portrait #Harajuku by @gilbertyu

AllieWe met at a concert by Kamijo @kamijoofficial, a Japanese metal rock vocalist who incorporates vampire elements in his work.“I’ve always lived in the socal area and am in high school. I love going to see live shows, and love the music scene of socal, especially its alternative and punk scene. The people are so kind and awesome in the community and I think that that’s what got me into jfashion and vkei. My outfit is a recycled misa cosplay (death note) and some things I found at thrift stores. The styles I like to wear are some sort of combo of punk/gothic clothing or anything I think looks good on me. “I’ve been interested in jfashion and vkei for years. I love anime--drawing it and reading it--which piqued my interest in the clothing, and I started incorporating it with my punk/goth clothes. “My favorite quote is ‘I believe that artists should be paid for their creativity. There's no other industry where people can come in and take what you create for free and give it away for free and that's acceptable.’ -Mark Hoppus, blink-182 bassist “#gilbertyuphotography #streetportrait #japanesefashion #portrait #Harajuku by @gilbertyu

KaiyaWe met at a concert by Kamijo @kamijoofficial, a Japanese metal rock vocalist who incorporates vampire elements in his work.“I was born in Illinois, but lived most of my childhood and life in Pennyslvania for 20+ years. I recently moved back to Illinois this year to pursue my new life journey! I'm going to school for Fashion Design and Textiles to further my dreams in creating cute and unique outfits, and hoping to get into a future job involving sustainable fashion! For the past 5 years, I became interested in how today's clothing is made, with cheap fabrics like polyester, and how harmful those fabrics can be on a health and sustainability scale. The fashion industry is very flawed these days, and I want to work hard by committing my knowledge and passion into creating cute, J-fashion inspired pieces made with sustainable materials, such as cotton, organic fabrics, etc. My hobbies are sewing and playing retro video games. This year, I've gotten into repairing clothing, and I want to learn the art of Sashiko stitching. It’s a such a cool technique to mending your clothes!“I’ve been into J-fashion since 2007 and I found it after discovering visual kei music! I fell in love with the dramatic make-up and outfits from the visual kei scene. Around that time, I got introduced to decora and lolita fashion as well, and have been wearing lolita since 2010. I’ve always loved the J-fashion community because I like to see other people express themselves visually in a world full of monotone colors. J-fashion has always been my outlet into expressing my authentic self, so it’s great to see like-minded people doing the same.“I chose this outfit to go to Kamijo’s concert in LA, called “Sanctus of the Damned”. I wanted to bring something formal and elegant to the show. The theme of the outfit was to capture the beauty of a “pink rose”. One of Kamijo’s common motifs is the rose, so I wanted to fit that into the outfit, as for pink being my favorite color. I honestly felt like a princess that day!”#gilbertyuphotography #streetportrait #japanesefashion #portrait #Harajuku by @gilbertyu
