If you’ve been around me anytime there’s a good cloud, there’s a good chance I pointed it out. I’m bit obsessed with clouds.

Sometimes they remind me of people. Sometimes they look like things. Sometimes they seem to contain a feeling that I recognize but have a hard time explaining. And sometimes they’re just really nice to look at.

I think part of what I like about them is that they exist somewhere between being something and being nothing. They can look enormous and permanent. A few minutes later they can become something completely different or completely go away.

Humans have been finding meaning in clouds for longer than we have written history. We’ve read weather in them, omens, gods, animals, faces and entire stories. There’s even a word for divination through clouds “nephomancy. A psychological term for our tendency to find recognizable forms in ambiguous things “pareidolia”.

But I’m not sure the meaning is really in the cloud. Maybe looking at clouds is a little like looking at ourselves. We take something shapeless and temporary and recognize whatever our mind happens to bring to it.

I have hundreds of pictures of clouds on my phone. I’ve painted them, photographed them, at one point for work I even had to make a big physical 3d printed cloud.

Maybe collecting pictures of them is an attempt to hold onto something that by its nature can’t bve held onto… maybe I just like clouds. Here’s a few I’ve liked over the years. by @gilescarson

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to work with Tim Rossiter on Mythical Creatures: The Stories We Carry at USC Pacific Asia Museum, conceived by Curator and Artistic Director Dave Young Kim. I’m not sure why it’s taken me this long to post about it, this was genuinely one of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on.

Tim Rossiter and I worked on the design and fabrication of two of the exhibition’s central mythical figures:

The Tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog associated with shapeshifting, mischief, and good fortune. Within the exhibition, the Tanuki becomes part of a larger story about Korean American communities in Los Angeles and the complicated relationships between gangs, protection, identity, and the neighborhoods they occupied.

Jin Chan, the Money Toad, a three-legged figure from Chinese tradition associated with prosperity and abundance. Within the exhibition’s Uncle Speaks narrative, the Money Toad becomes something more complicated: a meditation on our hunger for wealth, praise, and recognition, and on learning when enough is enough. Rather than treating abundance as something to possess, the story asks what happens when we’re able to share it freely.

It was a really special project to be a part of, and I’m grateful to Tim for bringing me in and to Dave and the museum team for creating such an ambitious exhibition.

The show is still up through September 6 at USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, so there’s still a little time to see it in person.

🏁 🔥 Almost blew a gasket when I saw the final pieces build by @lunaluna.studios and painted by @valleykustoms for the @wearebraindead booth at @doverstreetmarketlosangeles

I had the pleasure of working with @visualadhesive doing the design work on these. Normally I'm a little more in the fab work as well but it was cool focus on the design aspect and let some talented people do their thing. Tomorrow the northern hemisphere will be farthest from the sun which marks winter solstice. The longest night of the year. I’ve been working on some ceramic sculptures for the last few years and been sorta secretly posting about it on another account under @abtractumfigura. It feels appropriate to reveal this for a small group show by the name “night of illumination” where all pieces will be lighting based. I have a couple lamp sculptures that I’m excited to showcase. Pretty cool that this commercial for @playdiablo with
@sarahmgellar came out today.

This was a really cool one because it was a mix of real set dressing/props and an @unrealengine set that I was able to set dress and dial in at before the shoot. I’ve been doing my own designs in Unreal and I definitely looking forward to more digital production like this.

I don’t know why I haven’t posted about this …It was one of my favorite projects I’ve worked on.

We created a world influenced by the golden age of country music. A washed up country star learns a thing or two about heartache with the help of his four inch best bud named Archie.

We shot last year using both miniature and “bigature” puppets to make the Archie come alive. Really cool stuff 10/10 would do again.
