Jamii Recommends: King Gilgamesh (and the Man of the Wild) at Soulpepper @soulpeppertheatre!

On Sunday, September 28, our team went to see King Gilgamesh at Soulpepper and we were blown away.

The mix of story, music, and performance kept us hooked from start to finish. Ahmed Moneka and Jesse LaVercombe bring so much honesty to the stage, weaving together myth and everyday Toronto life in a way that feels powerful and relatable. Ahmed’s JUNO-nominated Arabic jazz ensemble makes you move in your seat. Almost every musician is someone we’ve shared memories with right here on The Esplanade: Selcuk Suna @selcuksunaofficial , Jessica Deutsch @jessica.hana.deutsch , Demetri Petsalakis @demetriospetsalakis , and Paco Luviano @pacoluviano . Seeing them light up the stage at Soulpepper was a reminder of how fortunate we are to witness their artistry both in our neighbourhood and on stages like Soulpepper’s @soulpeppertheatre .

What we loved most is how it’s really about friendship, identity, and finding a place where you belong. That hit home for us, these are the kinds of stories we try to lift up in our own work too.

If you have the chance, go see this show before it closes on October 5. It’s funny, it’s moving, and honestly you’ll probably keep thinking about it after you leave the theatre!
