After the cemetery, on the way to our campsite this lookout called. The smoke and clouds shifted a lot making the light change constantly, and it was as though the mountains and sky were making visual music. I was in awe.

I like to stop by old cemeteries whenever time allows, and the little out of the way ones that I just happen upon are often my favourites. This one was for a mining community, with lots of children, young adults, and entire families. The simplicity of the place had me in a quiet awe. It has clearly seen fire in its time, and some of the graves hold stories are poetic and recent enough to still be in living memory, like the seven year old boy who "climbed the impossible mountain". I could have spent all afternoon on this little patch of the mountain wondering and imagining who all these people were, the lives they lived, and so on. But clouds were building and we still needed to journey on and set up camp.

I could take in this smell forever.

At one point on the main path up I stopped in the shade on a rock that overlooks the flatirons, locals know the one, and a few moments later an older couple from New Jersey followed suit. They were struggling from both the heat and altitude, so the shade and friendly conversation was welcome to them. They asked what else they should see while in Boulder, and so on. I told them to drink plenty of water and just before leaving told the woman to smell the tree. A look of bewilderment and curiosity flashed across her face and she immediately, without question or hesitation, put her nose up against the bark as I had just done and started up with amazement. They were both smelling the tree more as I walked away.

Sitting in this spot I cried...
I cried tears of mourning for the life I didn't get to live, grief for much of that which I do, gratitude for simply being able to experience this, and overwhelming awe for how beautiful it is.

It was extremely hot and slightly smoky but I couldn't pass through Boulder without seeing these old friends and walking some of their trails. I stopped in every patch of shade for a drink of water and had lunch in a favourite spot before meandering back down.

Side note, if anyone needs someone with an elegant and beautiful yet creepy and deformed back for a horror film or photoshoot I'm your gal. My scoliosis is doing its thing here!

It was the first time I've had a chance to visit Colorado in August, so I got to meet many plant species that I hadn't seen before! These star gentian were an instant favourite. Some are such a deep purple that they almost look black.

I could have stayed in this spot all day.
The lake shone blue and reflected the mountains and pine trees perfectly. The ground is spongy in this particular spot -a welcome feeling after hiking up rocks to get here- and a babbling brook laughs nearby. Wildflowers of all colours are in full bloom all around, and there was just enough of a breeze. It was a perfect day.

Better late than never? I got so caught up wishing I had taken off my hat that I couldn't get around to choosing a photo and posting it. But this hat is essential to all my Colorado hikes, so it's fitting for it to be present in more than one post, since I only take it off for pictures.
But anyway, look at this waterfall! The first day of adventures this past trip had me up at 4:15am for a sunrise drive in the mountains and up past waterfalls to a lake. The company was impeccable, and the weather perfect.
