AMEN - the 3rd release by Brooklyn-based visionary bassoonist, composer & producer Joy Marie Guidry.

Articles headed “Joy Guidry’s Music Is An Evocation Of Prayer” & “Through jazz, ambient, and gospel, Joy Guidry aims to heal, inspire, and comfort” give a glimpse at her sacred work.

In her own writing for @thewiremagazine , Joy unveils how studying the teachings of Sun Ra led her to feel both seen yet unsettled. Deeply moved by Sun Ra’s personal freedom, she realised her own struggles in surrendering her ego to her art & Creator. She was awakened to the blockade in her own life: confronting the fact that she was living in a body unmatched with “the person her soul was meant to exist, thrive and create in”. Going on her gender transitioning journey, she also embarked on one of understanding improvisation on spiritual & ancestral levels.

‘Radical Acceptance’, Joy’s 1st album was a project brought forth on her journey of learning to love her trans identity…“after releasing Radical Acceptance, it was time for me to truly practice radical acceptance and understanding and practicing radical self-love.“

Created over the 2.5 years that followed, the even more vulnerable, loaded, boundary-pushing & genre-melding 3rd album was born. ‘Amen’, released in 2024 is a work of community, where Joy welcomes an ensemble of voices to marry meditative works with free-jazz and explosive gospel speeches. By channeling the spirit of the Southern church, where she first found music as a child in Texas, through her avant-garde experimental pieces, she connects her musical influences of past + present.

‘Amen’ opens with ‘Psalm 138:7’. As I listen I hear the calming words of that ancient old song permeate peacefully through her gentle bassooning. The album later moves into a fiery preach by Pastor E. Dewey Smith calling out the church’s hypocrisy on LGBTQ+ rights; “We pick and choose the scriptures that we want to beat folk up with rather than look at our own lives”, before the rhapsodic “Members Don’t Get Weary”, an ode to luminary drummer, Max Roach. Closing with ‘Revelation 7:16’, Joy sends us off with an ethereal & poignant final “Amen”.

Marysia Osu - Harp, Beats & Dreams

Released in October 2024 on Brownswood Recordings, pressed sustainably by the family-owned Seabass Vinyl, Scotland’s first wax pressing plant. This album consists of 10 meditative melodies all composed, arranged and produced by Polish-born, London-based multi-instrumentalist Maria Osuchowska, aka @marysia_osu

From getting her hands on a harp at the age of 11, Marysia has trained to become an incredibly accomplished musician. She is a member of Levitation Orchestra and has played with the likes of Yazmin Lacey, Laura Misch, Loyle Carner, and Joe Armon-Jones.. to name a few.

‘Harp, Beats & Dreams’ is her debut album and is the fruit of a four-year bedroom project, documenting her exploratory journey of making music that experimentally blends her expertise as a classical harpist with improvisation and electronic production. It is an assemblage of sonic diary entries, creating dreamy soundscapes that encapsulate her personal reflections across that time. In Marysia’s words “it delves into the multifaceted nature of our personalities, exploring and embracing each aspect of ourselves. It’s a celebration of self-acceptance and harmony within.”

At the album launch in 2024 in Dalston’s Servant Jazz Quarters, Marysia performed the full album for the first time, bringing to stage YUIS on flute, Plumm for vocals and Riccardo Trissino Daibire on bass. Adorned in her own handmade ethereal crochet two-piece and selling unique pieces of jewelry that bring “old harp bass strings to bling”, Marysia revealed she’s an otherworldly merchant of many traits. 🧚‍♂️🪉🌫️🧶

Transcended into a dream-like state, laid across pillows on the @shai.space floor for @restfulpleasures last week, I treasured getting to listen to Marysia play again - this time she developed compositions live along to the recorded sounds of the wind blowing through her harp strings. Subsequently, I’ve been reminded once again of how much I love this album. Originally written for the @earthgrooveevents newsletter, I felt this wee review deserved a resharing.

Resavoir - Themes for Dreams

‘Themes for Dreams’ is the latest 13 track album by Chicago-based producer, trumpeter, and composer Will Miller (@resavoir ). My pre-order landed in the post with the timely arrival of spring, and it’s been spinning ever since.

Recorded between 2021-2025, the album is stripped back in composition yet rich in collaboration, with @mmartassofia & @jeremiahchiu (amongst others) as participants on the project.

Abiding by its title and reflected in its album art - a visual idiom inspired by the old trope of ‘counting sheep to fall asleep’ - this immersive body of cinematic work can be described as ‘daydream music’ - a collection of ambient tracks that’ll ease your mind & soul into a state of relaxation.

~~~You can read more on my substack~~~
When I ponder on sleep, meditation and relaxation, I arrive at prayer.  Scroll through and you’ll see a clip (+ some other snippets) experimenting with spinning ‘Rafael’s Prayer’ by Sault over Resavoir’s ‘Tea’ on the decks in the @voices_radio for my last show with glorious guest, Rohan Rakhit. We also played ‘Leaves’ which is my personal favourite from Miller’s album, as well as many other ambient, spiritual and gospel gems. As always, you can listen back on Soundcloud / Mixcloud. Huge thanks to @rohan_rakhit for all his beautiful selections & sharing about the very exciting beginnings of @firstlight.ldn - check it out!
A Spoonful of Honey w/ @denaimoore 🦋
Denai is the founder of patty shop (@flakybydee), author of ‘Plentiful’, chef behind @dees_table and a talented musician who has released 3 albums as well as collaborated with names like @the_mura_masa , @sbtrkt & many more
Denai is someone who really embodies this idea of being on an ever-evolving journey… where you’re never too early or too late to try something new. She doesn’t box herself into one identity but follows what feels creatively exciting, whether that’s music, food, or something else entirely.
Along the theme of sonic & culinary flavours of Jamaica, we enter a chat about Denai’s transition from singing/song-writing into cheffing. We discuss the parallels between making music and creating dishes. We chat about how her cooking is rooted in veganism but also deeply connected to her Jamaican heritage.
My favourite @voices_radio show to date all thanks to Denai and extra special guest @laramhall . You can listen back on Mixcloud/soundcloud ☀️
TEMESGEN (Thank God); the debut EP of @zenaforeva
Fusing the spiritual musical tapestry of their homeland with influences absorbed through playing amongst London’s jazz scene, and inspirations from years of listening to Maxwell, Marvin Gaye, Shuggie Otis & D’Angelo, ZENA have reimagined ethio-jazz into something genre-defying that’s both nostalgic + futuristic. The result is an EP of soulful, smooth, seductive, synth-infused melodies that will encourage one to be thankful & show gratitude.
Photographed by @_adamajalloh
Art direction @kungfukenii
Released on @brownswood
“It’s You (Ante Neh)” is not only a proper earworm, through this track Yohan Kebede (of @kokorokomusic ), Menelik & @mezthehun pay homage to Kuku Sebsibe. You may be familiar with the master singer through the reissue by @littleaxerecords of her first album originally released in 1982 on cassette, sung in Amharic. If not, I recommend checking it out!
Kuku, born in Addis Ababa, began singing and performing in her early teenage years. Mirrored in her track titles, “Longing For You / Happy Seeing You / On My Heart’s Road”, she sings poetic ballads, showing a romantic & sensual side to Ethiopian music. Kuku Sebsibe sung alongside some of the seminal bands emerging from Ethiopia such as the Roha Band and ethio jazz group, the Walias, founded in the 1970s by @astatkemulatu and included the luminary keyboardist and accordion player, @hailumergia
Mário Rui Silva - Stories From Another Time 1982-1988.
As we joyfully greet the sights + smells of spring, I have turned my listening back to this album to soundtrack therapeutic cherry-blossom infused walks in the park & relaxing evenings at home.
A hugely popular (and rightly so) compilation assembled in 2021 by Time Capsule’s Sam Jacob and Kay Suzuki, who wanted to spotlight the works of a hidden gem.
A varied selection of groovy hypnotic Angolan folk lullabies, collected across 3 albums released in the 1980s by guitar maestro Mário Rui Silva (1953-2024). This mesmerising album is a must have on your playlists or in your record collection if you can find yourself a copy somewhere! I was lucky to get put onto it by the bossman at London’s best record shop 🫶🏻
Born in Luanda, Angola, under the Portuguese colonial regime, Mário Rui Silva began his path into music joining a band at 9 years old. Later he would go on to play alongside musical icons of central Africa like Francis Bebey and Bonga, whom Silva recorded with on the legendary Angola ’72 album.
As well as a musician, he was a musicologist: a scholar and storyteller of the roots of Angolan music. His style blends traditional semba & kazukuta (the Angolan rhythms of resistance against western colonial rule) with European jazz.
Just 2 years prior to his passing he was awarded the National Prize for Culture and Arts 2022 in Luanda for his efforts in disseminating Angolan music across the globe, dedicating over 5 decades of his life to the cause. This beautiful compilation is “a snapshot of one man’s journey to the core of his nation, charged with the search for a culture uprooted by colonialism”.
Don’t forget to have fun!!!
The 2nd album by @don_glori_aka_gordon released on @deepmatter records in 2024 and a highlight of our most recent @voices_radio show.
Initially recorded over 3 stressful days of Aussie high heat + general life chaos, Don Glori revisited the project in the lesser hot kitchen of his flat in Whitechapel, 2023. A genre-blurring funky, jazz fusion release with sprinkles of samba.
Prior to becoming matching puffer pals, I was that gig goer sheepishly asking for a squiggle. Gordon drew me a spoon, so I knew he was a real one.
If you don’t know Mr Glori, he’s a wicked  DJ, producer, composer & multi-instrumentalist who left sunny Naarm/Melbourne to bless London town with his presence. He’s got a gig at @mothclub tomorrow (5/3) and if you’re lucky enough there might be a ticket or two left. Keep an eye out on the other exciting updates he has in store….
There’s those select few gigs at the Jazz Cafe where the crowd is so quiet in awe & respect of the artist that you can hear the gentle taps of the cutlery on the mezzanine above or the breath sounds of the captivated listener beside you.
Fabiano do Nascimento’s latest record launch last night was one of them. Even in the space between songs as he tuned his guitar, the crowd stood silent, patient, expectant. What a feat to set a mood so intentional amongst the hustle of an over caffeinated post-commute London crowd on a Monday night.
“VILA” is the latest collaboration by the acclaimed BrazilIan guitarist with a sixteen piece orchestra led by trombonist & arranger Vittor Santos. On the cover you see a serene scene of children playing on the street outside the door of Nascimento’s childhood home in Rio de Janeiro - a reflection of the intimate, gentle & nostalgic music found within the sleeve.
I came across @fabianodonascimentomusic through his project with saxophonist Sam Gendel with “The Room” - a peaceful Latin jazz duet album. I was then reintroduced by Kev spinning his ambient ‘Mundo Solo’ LP on the decks in store at Jelly Records. And now I’m pure buzzed to bless my set up at home with this new symphonic samba beauty on @farout_recordings . The album will be released on streaming platforms later this week on the 27th Feb. Check it out!
