In Noisemakers, Gil Kuno uses flip-dot displays to create a musical composition. Flip-dot displays were invented in 1961 and were most commonly used in bus destination signs. Othello like dots are physically flipped using electro–magnets in order to articulate images or text. When each dot flips, it makes an audible click. Images were sequenced such that their flipping click sounds would articulate a musical composition. The images displayed are the score – the audio composition is a result of the score being displayed on this technology. In a music video, the video is articulated to the music provided. In Noisemakers, the music is articulated by the video displayed. At the center of the installation is Noisemaker Digits, a work that incorporates magnetically driven gas station price displays into the composition. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the piece by pressing its buttons, adding their own beats to the evolving soundscape. In Noisemakers, the music is articulated by the video displayed. Version 1 is an homage to John Conway, the creator of the Game of Life (Conway passed away from COVID in 2020.) Cellular automaton scenes from the game can be seen interspersed throughout the composition. 📣 Meet Gil Kuno, an artist participating in BUNA vol. 4. Gil Kuno has been challenging the boundaries of various media since the introduction of the Internet. Gil’s Unsound.com (1994) was an early crowd sourcing web experiment. In 1996, he created Wiggle, the world’s first Internet band. He has since created various sound sculptures and installations, including Noisemakers, which explores the composition possibilities of flip dot displays. Noisemakers are Gil’s sound sculptures that use flip dot displays to create a musical composition. The dots are physically flipped using electromagnets in order to articulate images. When each dot flips, it makes an audible click. Gil sequenced images such that their flipping click sounds would articulate a musical composition. The images displayed are the score — the composition is a result of the score being displayed on this technology. This version is an homage to John Conway, the creator of the Game of Life. “Waterfall” is part of the Future Kakejiku series, a body of work whose form factor recalls the traditional vertically hung Japanese scroll. The piece features an animation of a waterfall filmed in Vienna, Austria. The soft trickling sound produced by the flipping dots evokes the presence of an actual waterfall. Flip-dot displays, first developed in 1961, were originally used most commonly in bus destination signage. Like Othello pieces, each dot is physically flipped by electromagnets to form images or text, and every transition produces a distinct audible click, turning the mechanism itself into part of the work’s sonic texture. This concept involves the act of visualising, through their art, the imagery that exists in the space between ‘0’ that is representing ‘nothingness’ or ‘emptiness’ and ‘1’ that is representing ‘existence’. This collaborative exhibition presents artworks by five artists created in the space between ‘0’ and ‘1’ within the exhibition spaces of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, which have been continuously maintained 100 years. “Waterfall” makes use of flip dot display technology from the 60’s often used on bus destination signs. Waterfall” is about the singularity of chaos. The animated sequence is mapped from footage of a waterfall in Vienna, Austria. The chaos of the water is constant throughout the day – a universal singularity.
