The Osgoode Sikh Students Association (OSSA) hosted its inaugural moot competition, the Khalra Cup, from October 5-6 at Osgoode Hall Law School. This was a huge accomplishment for a club that has only been in existence for less than two and a half years. The competition was a grand success, well-received by participants from four Ontario law schools, judges from across the province, and the Toronto community at large.

It has been one of my greatest honors working on this project alongside a team of dedicated Sikh law students who ensured this vision became a reality.

This competition is dedicated to the legacy of human rights activist Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra who brought international attention to the human rights violations occurring in Punjab during the 1980s and 90s. The purpose of this annual moot competition is to engage students in the nuances of legal issues encountered by minority communities and highlight them on a national stage through this moot.

This project stands out to me for three reasons: (1) I was able to honour my idol Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra by naming this moot after him, (2) I learned how to vest my trust in a team dedicated to making this dream a reality while I sat overseeing this project from across the Atlantic, and (3) it demonstrated the importance of a strong support system as this moot was the result of an entire network of mentors, lawyers, students, and community members coming together and giving us their time, resources, and advice.

As the new year begins I reflect on the year that just passed and one thing I’m super grateful for is the opportunity to work at two amazing placements in 2023. I was fortunate to land a summer student position at Dentons Canada LLP and spend the Fall semester as a student caseworker at Parkdale Community Legal Services with their Immigration division.

The two experiences were extremely different but both were able to teach me valuable skills and lessons that have made me a better person and hopefully a better lawyer. I’m also grateful for the fact I was able to work on Bay Street during the summer and immediately jump into public legal aid work in September - exposing me to a plethora of perspectives that I could engage with and learn from.

Hoping for an exciting year ahead as I count down my final year and a half in law school. Stay tuned for more! 🙏🏻🔥👀

OCIs (on-campus interviews) are upon us and tons of law students are gearing up for the Toronto recruit! In-firm interviews can be stressful but with the right amount of preparation and practice, anything is possible.

The tips in the post above are based off the feedback and advice of my mentors that helped me throughout the 1L recruit earlier this year. I hope this serves as a foundation post for students who are unsure about how they should be prepping for their upcoming interviews.

Something I haven’t been able to share much detail about with you all is that before the summer I was accepted into the dual degree JD/MBA program!

For that reason, this year is entirely dedicated to the MBA curriculum at the Schulich School of Business. As someone who has had no prior background in business, the transition from law to business this year has been a tough one. However, I’m glad I get to learn about something I’ve been interested in for quite some time and use this knowledge in multiple facets of my life.

Had the opportunity to judge a mock trial today at the UTM campus! This is my first time judging any sort of moot or mock trial since COVID, so it was a unique but memorable one.

My interest in law grew ten fold when I competed in mock trials back in high school, and grew further during my first moot in law school.

For any prospective law students, I think mock trials and moots are a great way to refine your oral advocacy skills well in advance of entering law school or the field. Make use of these opportunities!

We’re back babyyyy

Another school year is here and with that so is the first post for this term. 1L can be a huge learning curve and anything that can help accelerate that learning will push you towards faster and greater success.

With that in mind here are five tips I feel like are genuinely useful for 1L students. I implemented these throughout my first year and I think these are what got me through.

Yesterday I took a member of Osgoode’s Class of 2025 on a tour of the Oz building! This tour helped me remember a time when I first got accepted and had no idea of what to do next to prepare for life at a new school.

Getting accepted into a Canadian law school is a feat of its own, so take the time to first congratulate yourself for such an amazing accomplishment.

When it came to my decision to choose Osgoode the following factors had a significant influence on my decision:

- Tuition of approx. $26,000 per year
- Being able to live at home
- Their clinical intensive program (credits for volunteering with a legal clinic!!!)
- Line-up of top tier professors
- Discussions with Oz students

The post above is meant to simply serve as a guide for important considerations to have in mind when going about choosing the a school. It’s not an easy task but it’s best to assess the whole picture before making that call.

Last weekend I participated in my first competitive moot competition which was hosted by the Osgoode Constitutional Law Society.

As someone who has recently been contemplating the various paths one can take in a legal career, this was my first look at litigation. Through six rounds of mooting with my amazing partner, I was able to combine oral advocacy skills with legal reasoning and make it to the final round.

After it was all said and done Tripat and I left with the Top Respondent Team award, a second place finish and I received the top oralist award.

I’m glad I took the risk of participating in my first moot as it was such a valuable experience and l look forward to continue exploring these opportunities my time at Osgoode!

Today was the first day back at Osgoode as part of our return to in-person classes. Although the transition carries many accommodation concerns, it felt great being able to sit with peers in a real classroom environment. I’m very excited for the rest of the semester!

After a much needed winter break, COVID recovery, and start of the second semester I’m back with a string of posts reflecting on my first semester of law school.
