CLINK — working prototype. A standalone bridge between Pro DJ Link and MIDI hardware. No laptop. No Rekordbox running in background. Just the CDJs, CLINK, and your MIDI gear. I spent most of the summer developing this little box from scratch, and I now have the first four functional prototypes up and running. I’ve often been asked why I don’t play vinyl at gigs anymore, here are my thoughts tinged with a hint of nostalgia: In the late 90s, I spent most of my time as a young teenager in a small videogames store up the street of my parents’ house. On summer days, the music from the recordshop next door rhythmed our gaming sessions (those who remember these video game OSTs from that era will understand that the perfect alchemy of these two media sealed the soundtrack of my youth). It took a while for the shy teenager I was to dare to cross the door of the « big kids’ store », but when I did, I was sucked into this brand new world. I then used the savings I had dedicated to my driving license to buy myself a pair of turntables. Result after more than twenty years ? I have never stopped buying records since then and I still don’t have a driver’s license… 🤗 In the early 2010s, I dabbled a bit in hybrid setups for fun but vinyl remained the backbone of my gigs. So what happened ? The worst to a collector: having records stolen at a party. Since then, I see only advantages in going digital when I play outside my cozy home setup. The most important thing for me is the undeniable improvement in sound quality: zero rumble, no dust, no wasted faders, no worn stylus,... My digital collection being mainly composed of vinyl ripps, I’ve come to set up a strict digitization protocol: - A nice modern turntable - A good Shibata, MicroLine, etc. cartridge - A strong phono preamplifier - Final chain processing (possibly remastering) So yes, it takes time (especially in relation to my OCDs concerning the covers & metadata encoding), but for a level of sound quality impossible to achieve for vinyl in club conditions. It is also more technical creativity: by using loops prepared in advance, we can better control the tension and reconstruct a track according to the audience. And finally... I have my entire collection in my pocket and my precious records wear out less !
