Meet the car that almost didn’t make it.
This is my 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (R129), Almandin Red, pre-facelift, and very much a survivor.
The R129 debuted at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show and was produced all the way through to 2001. Its design was shaped under the direction of Bruno Sacco, Mercedes’ legendary head of design from 1975 to 1999 - a man responsible for some of the most iconic shapes the three-pointed star ever wore. The result was a roadster that ditched the chrome-heavy look of its predecessor for something cleaner, more muscular, and built to age gracefully. Spoiler: it worked.
Mine is a pre-facelift car, meaning it still wears the original amber indicators, the contrast-painted Sacco boards, and all the details that make early R129s so distinct from the later versions.
What it doesn’t show is the journey it took to get here. Over nearly two years, this car lived in workshops. It was in bad shape. The kind of bad shape that has most people reaching for a scrapper’s phone number. I chose the other route. Every issue got sorted, every system got attention, and slowly it turned back into what it was always meant to be.
Some cars are worth saving. This one definitely was and while it’s road worthy and in good shape now, the journey isn’t quite over yet. There’s still a little left to do, and honestly, that’s part of the fun.

Yesterday I said goodbye to the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350. The best car I’ve ever driven with absolutely zero emotions attached to it.

Great electric range, genuinely comfortable. Not good looking, and definitely not fun to drive. The suspension is so soft it just floats along. Fine for cruising, not for anything spirited. 😄

5/10. I think that was my last (new) Mercedes for a while.

Here is the second part from the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin. This one is mostly F1 cars, from the current special exhibition „I Nemici del Drake. Enzo Ferrari e le scuderie inglesi.“

The exhibition tells the story of the British teams that challenged Ferrari in F1 between the 1960s and 1980s. Lotus, McLaren, Brabham, Tyrrell, Williams. Teams that Enzo Ferrari himself dismissively called „garagisti.“ The British teams fired back, nicknaming him „The Drake.“ From small workshops, these constructors took on the Drake by betting on aerodynamics, monocoque chassis and radical engineering, rather than raw engine power. The exhibition brings together 23 iconic cars, including 22 F1 single-seaters, alongside helmets, race suits and period memorabilia.

Running until October 11, 2026, if you are anywhere near Turin, this one is worth planning a trip around.

Turin has a museum that every car lover needs to put on their bucket list. The Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile is one of the oldest and most prestigious automotive museums in the world. Opened in 1960 and housed in a stunning purpose-built building, it has become a landmark of automotive history and culture.

Spread across three floors, the collection brings together nearly 200 cars representing 80 brands, taking you on a journey from the very earliest steam-powered vehicles all the way to modern design icons. From a Bernardi from 1896 and a Fiat from 1899 to a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost from 1914 and legendary racing machines by Ferrari and Alfa Romeo.

After a major renovation by architect Cino Zucchi, the museum reopened in 2011 and was listed by The Times among the 50 most beautiful museums in the world just two years later. The staging and scenography make this place feel alive, not like a dusty archive.

At €18, the admission is well worth it.
