🏳️‍🌈 Sometimes a queer love story needs to be told in a specific language, in a specific place, at a specific moment in someone's life.
Sometimes that story travels across an ocean, and someone in a completely different context recognizes their own longing in it.

We put together nine queer films — from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, France, Italy, Scotland, and the US. Different languages. Different decades. Different kinds of queer love, told with different kinds of trust.
What they have in common is the quiet before someone says the true thing. The look before the touch. The pause before the story becomes something you can never take back.

The films in this mixtape:
🌧️ Who'll Stop the Rain(2023, Taiwan)
🔥 Portrait of a Lady on Fire(2019, France)
🍑 Call Me by Your Name(2017, Italy/US)
💼 The New Employee: The Movie(2023, Korea)
🐝 Tell It to the Bees(2018, UK)
🌆 Suk Suk(2019, Hong Kong)
🌃 Do Not Go Gentle in Taipei(2021, Taiwan)
🌊 Queer(2024, Guadagnino)
🌸 Aoki & Mori(2023, Japan)

Nine queer love stories. Across languages, decades, and everything in between.

Angel's Egg (1985)
It confused audiences so badly on release, it nearly ended its director's career.
Angel's Egg (1985) — written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, with character art by the legendary Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy) — was a box-office failure critics still call one of the most inaccessible films ever made. A decade later, Oshii would direct Ghost in the Shell.
Critics have spent forty years comparing it to Kubrick's 2001 and Lynch's Eraserhead — a film built almost entirely without dialogue, closer to a moving painting than a story.
Now Cannes Classics has brought it back. A full 4K restoration, world-premiered at the 78th Festival de Cannes in May 2025.
No talking. Barely any plot. Just a girl, an egg, and a world that never explains itself.
🔔 Save it before the next restoration disappears again.
💬 Comment the "egg" you're still carrying — the thing you believe in without knowing why.

Palestinian Women, a Guide to Cultural Resistance (2020)

In 2017, French filmmaker Mariette Auvray set out with a young woman named Nadija — a girl from Jerusalem, roughly her own age — to drive across a divided land. Together they went from Jerusalem to Haifa, stopping in Acre, Bethlehem, Ramallah. On each side of the wall, they met the women who don't often make it into the coverage — the ones running things, making things, teaching things, keeping something alive.

A visual artist. A restaurant owner. A publisher. A feminist organizer. A young woman opening the door to her studio. Another walking her daughter to school.

The film doesn't ask you to take a side. It asks you to see what tends to get left out of the frame — the daily, unglamorous, deeply committed work of women who refuse to disappear.

To the director, they are the keepers of the culture there — and of a certain idea of resistance.

Marc had it all. A creative director job in Montreal. An apartment. A career. And the slow, quiet feeling that he was slowly disappearing inside himself.

So one day, he stopped fantasizing. He bought a one-way ticket to Provence. He wasn't going on holiday. He was going to become a shepherd — with no experience, no French country dialect, and no idea what he was doing. There, he met Alice, a civil servant who had also quit her job to look for something real. Together, with a border collie named Ola, they moved a flock through the mountains of the south of France, one hoofstep at a time.

Directed by Sophie Deraspe (whose Antigone was Canada's Oscar entry in 2019). This is her follow-up — a quiet, sunburnt, deeply rewarding film about what happens when you stop performing the life you thought you were supposed to want.

If you've ever caught yourself scrolling real estate listings in a small village at 2am — this one is for you.

Sometimes a film gives a child a role. Sometimes it gives a child the whole film.

We put together nine performances and portrayals from nine films — different countries, different decades, different kinds of stories — but the same quiet trust. The camera stays close. The direction gets out of the way. And a kid does something you can't teach and can't rehearse.

These lively eyes, honest performances — a vivid sense of life. They are shining on screen.
The films in this mixtape:
🍅 Red Persimmons(1996, Taiwan)
📓 Time Still Turns the Pages(2023, Hong Kong)
✨ Along With the Gods(2017, Korea)
🎒 Little Nicholas(2009, France)
🌾 Millet in the Wind(2024, Taiwan)
💎 A Bag of Marbles(2017, France)
🌲 Evil Does Not Exist(2023, Japan)
☀️ Aftersun(2022, UK)
🌳 Picnic(2024, Taiwan)

These are the eyes we keep coming back to.

Two nurses. One surgical ward. Twelve hours until sunrise.

Floria is skilled, empathetic, and holding it together — until she isn't. A colleague calls out sick. A woman with dementia keeps trying to go home. A cancer patient wants to talk about whether to keep fighting. Three brothers wait for someone to notice their dying mother. A wealthy man in a private room demands peppermint tea. An immigrant patient tells her he has no one — and she answers: then you'll just have to rely on me.

The WHO estimates the world will be short 13 million nurses by 2030. Late Shift is one of their nights.
Written and directed by Petra Volpe, whose The Divine Order was Switzerland's 2018 Oscar entry. Starring Leonie Benesch — the face of The Teachers' Lounge and September 5 — in a performance built not from breakdown but from restraint. Some reviewers have called it the hospital equivalent of The Bear.
Selected as Switzerland's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards. Music Box Films will release it across North America.

At the European premiere, nurses came in scrubs. They held up signs. They wrote: We Are Floria.

A Silent Voice : the Movie (2017)
In sixth grade, Shoya led his class in tormenting Shoko, a new student who could not hear. She transferred away. He became the next target. By high school, he had stopped speaking to anyone.
He gave away his money. Wrote out an apology list. Returned a childhood notebook to the girl he had once bullied. That's when the film begins.
What follows is one of the most quietly devastating stories ever told in animation — about how the person you hurt the most might be the only one who can help you come back.
Directed by Naoko Yamada at Kyoto Animation. Makoto Shinkai — the director of Your Name — publicly said he couldn't have made this film himself. It won Best Animation of the Year at the Japan Movie Critics Awards, competed at Annecy, and holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It's the anime people don't recommend lightly. Once you watch it, you don't forget it.

The Friends(1994)

After their first funeral, three elementary school boys in Kobe became obsessed with what death looks like. They picked a target — a reclusive old man in a house with an overgrown garden. They started watching him, waiting for him to die. He noticed.

What follows is one of the tenderest films ever made about how the young come to understand the old, and how the old learn to be seen again.

The director, Shinji Sōmai, made only 13 films before he died in 2001 at 53. In 1990, he was voted the best Japanese director of the 80s by Kinema Junpo. Hamaguchi, writing for Japan Society's 2023 retrospective, said: "no Japanese filmmaker makes a film without being conscious of Shinji Sōmai's existence."

Until 2023, almost no one in the West had seen his films. Japan Society in New York held his first North American retrospective. American Cinematheque in Los Angeles followed in 2026. The catch-up is happening right now.

The Friends is one of his most quietly devastating works. A summer that ends. A garden someone has to keep watering.

🔔 Follow us as the West catches up to Sōmai.
