Parents and guardians: GUSD needs your help to secure crucial funding for our schools and classrooms. Simply complete the meal service application for our district online or by downloading, printing, completing and returning a paper application to our seven school sites serving meals to children every weekday.

** Even if you don’t think your family qualifies for the program, applying ensures we receive every dollar allocated to our schools and classrooms! **

The need for applications is now! Unless we increase our applications, our district will lose $7 million a year for the next three years. That’s a total of $21 million dollars, which translates to a lot of technology, programs, textbooks, paper and more. You can help our schools avoid this loss of funding, and it’s easy to do.

Please apply by October 30, 2026 and help our schools, teachers and classrooms to continue providing excellent education to our students.

Congratulations to Christopher High School ceramics teacher, Tiffanie Willie-Beltran, and Brownell Middle School science teacher, Rainbow Lobo-Derr, for winning special recognition awards from the Santa Clara County Office of Education!

Ms. Willie-Beltran has been awarded the 2026 Mirastar Arts Leadership Award which honors those special instructors in Santa Clara County public schools who inspire students to enjoy and excel in arts, languages, creative writing and literature programs.

Ms. Lobo-Derr has been awarded the 2026 SCCOE Boldness in STEM Award which is given to a teacher who takes the adventurous path by piloting an unfamiliar technology or STEM subject or establishing new systems for bringing STEM to their students, team or site. This innovative teacher inspires others to seek the rewards that come from exploring the horizons of STEM education.

Both Ms. Willie-Beltran and Ms. Lobo-Derr will be recognized at the annual Teacher Recognition Celebration on October 19, along with the GUSD Teacher of the Year, Jane Ellis.

Today, at Glen View Elementary, Superintendent Munshi visited second grade classrooms to launch the "Readers to Leaders" initiative, to encourage early literacy. She spent a time reading "The Most Magnificent Thing," to students in Ms. Perez, Mr. Chavez, Mr. Cully and Ms. Wahhab's classes, and checked for understanding at the story's conclusion.

Readers to Leaders is a yearlong elementary read-aloud program designed to inspire second grade students through the power of stories.

Throughout the school year, Dr. Munshi will visit each elementary school site to read to second grade classes. Four picture books have been intentionally selected to bring the District’s strategic priorities to life while connecting students with the social-emotional skills they need to learn, grow and thrive.

Through these shared stories students will have the opportunity to make connections and see how the power of literacy can help them become confident learners and leaders.

The four Readers to Leaders books this year align with L.E.A.D, the District’s newly adopted commitment:

* Learning for the Future: The Most Magnificent Thing, by Ashley Spires
* Engaging Safe Schools: The Invisible Boy, by Trudy Ludwig
* Access for All Students:The Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson
* Deep Strong Foundations, After the Fall by Dan Santat

Students were also given a Readers to Leaders bookmark to use with their own personal reading choices.

The Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education will hold the September 17, 2026 regular board meeting at 7:00 pm at the District Office (7810 Arroyo Circle).

The meeting will also be livestreamed on the GUSD YouTube account: https://www.youtube.com/@GilroyUnifiedSchoolDistrict

Members of the public wishing to provide comment to the Board may do so in person, at the District Office, during the regular meeting.

Spanish interpretation is available for those who attend in-person.

On September 4, Superintendent Munshi met the four new Student Board Representatives from each GUSD high school. These students will attend board meetings during the 2026-27 school year to provide updates to the board about their school and other schools and programs in the District.

Please help us welcome Clara from Gilroy High, Samantha from Christopher High, Mia from GECA and Mitzly from Mt. Madonna High.

We are excited to have these four students on the dias with our board!

In Fall 2025, the Gilroy Unified School District partnered with San Jose State University to launch the SJSU Promise initiative, to expand college access and ensure local students have a supported and attainable pathway to a four-year university education.

Beginning with the fall 2026 admission cycle, the partnership guarantees admission to SJSU for graduating seniors from GUSD who meet CSU minimum eligibility requirements as first-time, first-year students.

The early results are already encouraging! Applications from Gilroy increased by 19%, and the admissions rate rose from 92.5% to 95.8%, and the percentage of admitted students who choose to enroll increased almost 3%.

Overall, the results reinforce the positive role of the SJSU Promise in reducing barriers, creating greater certainty in the college-going process, and strengthening pathways between our schools and SJSU.

The growth in Gilroy provides a strong foundation for expanding access and helping more local students see SJSU as an attainable destination for a four-year degree.

Congratulations GECA senior, Andrew Zhang, who has been named a 2027 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist!

Andrew joins more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. As a NMS Semifinalist, he has an opportunity to earn a National Merit Scholarship worth nearly $26 million that will be awarded in the spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2026 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

From over 16,000 Semifinalists, more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

This morning, the Gilroy Police Department responded to a call from a member of the public who reported seeing a person of concern entering the Luigi Aprea campus. The Gilroy Police Department (GPD) responded quickly to the call and put the campus on full lockdown, out of an abundance of caution.

Students and staff sheltered in place in their classrooms while GPD did a full security sweep of the campus. The police department determined that the reported person of concern was actually a staff member entering the break room while on a break.

We are grateful to the community member who did the right thing to "see something, say something," and we are grateful to GPD for their swift response to ensure that Luigi Aprea staff and students were safe.

There was never any threat to any member of the school community.

The lockdown was lifted and the instructional day has resumed. by @gilroy_usd

Congratulations to three GUSD elementary schools who have been recognized by the California PBIS Coalition for excellence in putting the core features of PBIS into practice!

🥇Luigi Aprea Elementary attained Gold level implementation status;
🥈Rucker Elementary attained Silver level implementation status; and,
🥉Eliot Elementary attained Bronze level implementation status.

The purpose of California PBIS is to establish a network for state education leaders, county offices, school districts and schools implementing multi-tiered frameworks through Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS).

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is an evidence-based, proactive framework used in schools to improve school climate, enhance student well-being, and promote positive social and emotional behavior rather than relying solely on punishment.
