Delighted to be able to attend a breakfast reception hosted by NIE, NTU at the Singapore High Commission (SHC) in London last Friday. This is my third visit to the SHC: the first was in 2022 to collect my passport and second in 2023 for the Presidential Election. My next (and last) will be on Polling Day for GE2025 (looks like it's really coming soon). Pardon the lack of variety in the pictures — it's not every day that I get to pose with these flags!

After days of intense report writing and frankly some pretty horrid weeks after returning to London, I decided to treat myself to the theatre adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's The Garden of Words. It was a last-minute decision to get the ticket for today even though I've been eyeing the play—which is closing two days later—for some time now (couldn't miss it just to do work right?)

Never did I expect to get the chance to chat and take a picture with Aki Nakagawa, who plays the female lead character, and Iniki Mariano, who plays the girlfriend of the male lead's brother. Absolutely love their brilliant performance and thrilled to meet them after the show!! 😊

Amid all the pomp and pageantry around the British royal family today, we Singaporeans in the UK were also treated to a dinner reception with our president Mdm Halimah Yacob! (Not to mention a surprise appearance by a very well-known fellow countryman too!) Thanks to the Singapore High Commission in London @sg.hc.london for organising the event.

#Throwback to the start of December when I went for the Rochester Dickensian Christmas Festival, which included the historic city's popular Christmas market. A nice afternoon away from the drudgery of work in a quaint, charming English town where Charles Dickens spent his childhood.

110 years ago on this very day in this very hour (14/04/1912, 23:40 ship time; 15/04/1912, 0302 GMT), the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Over a century later, the tragedy continues to fascinate many at Titanic: The Exhibition in London. Having seen the impressive 100th anniversary exhibition at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, I had to relive the experience in the country where it all began. Compared to the 2012 edition, which showcased plenty of artifacts and reconstructions of the ship's interior, the current exhibition revolves more around the stories of the ill-fated people on board, narrated over audio vis-à-vis individual exhibits. Listening to these biographies while seeing these personal objects is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Touching as they are, as the audioguide concludes, the Titanic will always set sail from Southampton, she will always hit the iceberg, and her stories will always be told.

It may well be another occasion today, but who says I can't post about Chinese New Year on its 14th day? (The truth is I'm just late 😅) This picture was actually taken on CNY eve, when I received a free 'mandarin orange' (the bigger fruit) from the lady boss of Huarun, a local Chinese provision store, after getting some groceries that day (so sweet!). I've enclosed it in inverted commas because I was surprised to discover that the big supermarkets in London carry different mandarin-like fruits with all sorts of names, a few of which were foreign to me. The small citrus shown here that I bought is called a "sweetclem". I decided to do some googling and realised there are so many varieties around that I didn't know of. Interestingly, what I knew about mandarin oranges since young was challenged as I had always thought that it refers to 柑, while tangerines are 橘/桔 (it's the opposite lol). Swipe next to see a summary of what I found!
P.S. So what's a sweetclem? It's a UK trade mark for a mandarin hybrid that's not a real clementine 😂 taken in London, United Kingdom by @gimthia

It's been three months since I arrived in London on 26th September. Three years ago when I first visited the UK for an academic conference in Loughborough, I decided to recce University College London and the Institute of Education upon returning to the capital as I had already set my sights on the DEdPsy programme here for some years. Despite the campus being small and compact (as most of inner London is anyway), I liked the environment which I saw. Little then did I know that I would actually find myself here in 2021, earlier than originally planned, leaving behind the country, people, and lifestyle I've known for over thirty years since I was born. Not only has my life changed radically, the world is also no longer the same as it was in 2018. As the year draws to a close, and as we sit on the cusp of another, I hope that 2022 will bring about either new or renewed beginnings for everyone. The next three years will certainly not be a bed of roses for me, but I know the journey will be worth it.

#Throwback to last year's Langkawi trip where I did an Ironman 70.3 (half Ironman) team relay with friends and completed a gruelling 90km bike course with crazy elevation levels. Really stretched my limits as a beginner amateur cyclist! Despite sustaining an injury due to my own blunder, I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to do it because I never believed I can attempt this world-renowned extreme endurance sport.

With mass running events all halted during the pandemic, I've leapt onto the virtual run bandwagon and greatly benefitted from the cumulative system that encourages consistent effort. Totally love how fun these challenges are with in-app milestones en route. The medals are absolutely beautiful too!
