Itโ€™s that time again when this one and I are throwing another dance party!! ๐ŸŽ‰ Jay will be playing music as well as running the sound for the evening โ€” all of which he makes look rather effortless. I wouldnโ€™t be who I am as a DJ (or person, really) without the influence of this one.โœจ He not only opens worlds, he creates them with his impeccible ear, musical sensibilities and heartfelt dedication. The balance of being informed yet not paralyzed, to sense the urgency and see the long game, to know yes, thereโ€™s psychological abuse, and for many itโ€™s very real and physical right now. I have to be honest, posting right now feels so trite, so vain, so strange in these times. Happy โ€ข Solstice ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒŒ What a year! What a life! What a time! Feeling thankful for the clarity that has been arriving in these final days of the year. The only task, really, is to just keep listeningโ€ฆ As we continue to let go of the final bits from our sheddy (is that a word?) year of the snake into the year of the horseโ€ฆ these animals pretty much sum it up for me. Iโ€™m savoring the quiet, dark season and appreciating the grace and step by step nature of it all. ๐Ÿโœจ๐ŸŒ AND Iโ€™m looking forward to more of an upright trot, perhaps even a bit of galloping in the coming monthsโ€ฆ๐Ÿ‡ Wishing you all those cozy feelings of holiday magic and peace. This time of year is also wrought with grief, so a reminder to โ€œLet the grief of your heart transmute into artโ€ says me. Musical Buried Treasure ~ Patrick Cowley and MY MOM. When I first listened to the song Josh, from @darkentriesrecords , sent me as he believed it featured my mom, Peggy Gibbons on vocals โ€” I immediately burst into tears. It was incredibly surreal hearing her sing her heart out on a song recorded over 45 years ago! The song itself was written and produced by Patrick Cowley, who I came to discover, was an innovator, inspiring-pioneer and vital node in the creation of the dance music that I know and love so deeply today. I knew some history about the evolution of dance music, but didnโ€™t really put the whole High NRG/Frisco Disco threads of it all together until this was brought back to life. It finally clicked that the music scene my mom was in, for the greater part of 15 years with her band Loverde, was intrinsically tied to the dance music of today. What a kismet, full circle moment for us both! Josh, a caring custodian of Patrickโ€™s work and the underground music scene in general, sifted through moldy garages to bring us these recordings and we canโ€™t thank him enough. To feel the continuing influence of these musicians, who dedicated their life to music, touches me in the most loving and heartbreaking way. I never met Patrick, as he died young of AIDS (along with many of the musical people my mom worked with from this era), but I feel like I know parts of him through his work and the legacy he left behind. As chilling as his tragic premonition was with โ€˜Ice Ageโ€™ and the coming AIDS crisis, the music and dancers live on, perhaps now with an even more profound love and appreciation for the trailblazers along the way. An entire album of buried tracks from Cowleyโ€™s studio sessions was released last Sunday, in honor of what would have been his 75th birthday. As Josh put it, โ€œHard Ware is another crucial document of a tremendous talent taken too soon.โ€ The entire album is refreshing despite its age โ€” the sleeze, the simplicity, the fun, the signature โ€˜Cowley soundโ€™, the synth love, right up to the final trackโ€” the haunting hymn my mom is featured on. (Some Birthday eve musings, pic for the rithm) This week, I found myself listening to several people sharing (in an appropriate context) their intensely painful life experiences. Hurtful betrayals, losses, and deep wounds that though they perhaps may heal, will always be there. Yet each one of them, still alive, still bearing the wounds of their grief, hurt or however it may have entered the body. Still present. Aware. Here. My heart broke, as they looked me In the eye, and shared their guarded hearts so openly. It felt like a small relief for them, another being-stranger or not-now knows even a small fraction of their story. It felt like an honor. This Life! Itโ€™s all so precious. Itโ€™s all a gift. The blessings, the challenges, the paradox of being both alone and not alone. I find myself inspired by the childlike luminosity I see shining in their eyes despite it all. Iโ€™m in awe of the genuine bravery and strength it takes for some to โ€˜just keepโ€ฆgoingโ€ฆโ€™ May our swords of gentleness and compassion be sharpened in the hard times we face personally and collectively.
