Released two new songs with some of my best friends today. It can feel quite weird making music and doing what I do for a job - it’s far too easy to get sucked into the marketing mindset and worrying about audience or growth or playlists or all the other shenanigans and nonsense. It’s also incredibly hard to find time for a hobby like making music when you’re all in your mid 30s - despite having no desire to “make it” anymore, there’s a weird other pressure involved, where you’ve had to struggle and send calendars back and forth for weeks to find a moment to all get together, and you’re all semi burnt out and would probably rather be watching Great British Menu, so my god you better make those two hours worth it.

But listening back to these songs this morning reminded me that by far the most important thing is creating something you’re proud of and making silly memories with your mates. We recorded You Said and Sense Of Healing over two days at @fuzzbrainstudios, fuelled by brisket and vapes. It was a lovely sunny weekend but I could not have been happier to be cooped up in a tiny converted warehouse while we played with the dog bark sound effect on a kid’s keyboard and Jack spent an hour hyperfocussed on finding a fifth that we ended up taking out in the mix anyway. I’m not sure Ben would say the same.

Thanks also to @bobcooperproducer. It’s another testament to years of friendship that he was very patient and even somehow thrilled when my only note was “can you make the drums sound like the best drums in the world” (that’s Colourmeinkindness, fact fans).

Making music is hard and weird and expensive and time-consuming, but spending time on hard, weird, expensive things with your best friends is the best feeling in the world.

none more deserving of every shred of success. from being soaked to the bone for a video shoot in the middle of winter, to signing over a thousand records in one day yesterday, the hard work and positivity is beyond admirable
