My short story “The Arrow” (published originally in the fantastic @onestorymag and in my short story collection GREEN FROG) is a 2025 O. Henry Prize for Short Fiction winner!!!!!!!

Thank you to the wonderful One Story team and editors extraordinaire @willallison2 and @patrickryannyc for working with me on this story and nominating it for this incredible award. Thank you to O. Henry Prize series editor @jennymquigley and this year’s judge, THE Edward P. Jones, for this immense honor.

Shoutouts as always to beloveds @vanjchan and @katiedevine for being the very first readers on this one and offering such incisive and helpful feedback.

Swipe for a photo of “The Arrow” in all her incarnations, including her earliest form as a messily hand-scrawled story in Winter 2020, and a photo taken of my aura in Chinatown in 2018, which was the partial inspiration for one scene.

O. Henry’s stories were among the very first I ever encountered when I was a kid, and I am never getting over the fact that Edward P. Jones not only read my story but chose it to be included in this year’s anthology.

Grateful to have released a second book this year — and a debut story collection at that! — and for all the love Green Frog has gotten! Thank you so much to @electricliterature, @npr, @elleusa, & @debutiful for including Green Frog on these incredible lists alongside so many brilliant, beautiful books. I’ve been toad it’s not easy being green but I’m having a frogtastic time 🥁 Also including here a roundup of frog memes for yall because it’s been a long year and we all deserve some hop in our lives 🐸 taken in Happy Frog by @ginathechung

Last wknd I got to go to San Diego to accept my first-ever book award, for my debut novel Sea Change. Grateful to the librarians of @ala_apala for this immense honor, and for creating such a warm and inviting space for AAPI writers to gather and celebrate. In between, I snacked on oysters, listened to the waves, got sunburned, hugged friends old and new, discovered possible hidden portals. Stevie cannot read yet but she recommends that you purchase, read, and support the beautiful and innovative @elastic.mag, the newest issue of which I have a story in! She’s a little oddity born from some fragments I wrote in 2020/2021 and that the brilliant editorial mind of @hbrenhouse helped shape into something wilder and freer. 🥚🐣

One week from today. Brooklyn. A very psychedelic launch for Elastic No. 2: The Interspecies Issue @thesultanroom. Strap yourselves in for an evening in the image of our weird little mag. Readings by a band of our most favorite writers, some whom are getting on airplanes to join us: @pem.i, @elissawashuta, @ginathechung, @allegrahyde, and Avigayl Sharp. Free improvisation meets noise meets surreal American roots music by @astroturfnoise. Genre-bending DJ sets by @ateamer. Vibes courtesy of @thesultanroom in Bushwick, which has been called a “kitsch palace” and also “your Turkish grandmother’s house on acid.”

Bring your friends. Bring your students. Bring anyone interested in art that doesn’t give a damn about imagined boundaries. Prepare to encounter stories that step outside of the human experience in order to make sense of and survive it. Prepare to eat döner kebabs.

HFR’s Fiction & Poetry Contest is now open for submissions! WIN $1,000 + publication!🤩

This year’s fiction judge is Gina Chung @ginathechung , author of Sea Change and Green Frog, and this year’s poetry judge is Sarah Ghazal Ali @caesarah , author of Theophanies!

Submit 1-3 poems or up to 20 pages of fiction from now til the end of the month (Feb 28) to be considered for the prize + publication.

Submissions cost $23 and come with a one-year print subscription to the magazine (or $15 with a digital subscription.)

One winner each in poetry and fiction will be awarded $1,000 + publication, and one runner-up in each category will win $250, plus publication.

All the winning work will be published in an online folio this summer, as well as in the fall/winter 2026 print issue. All entries can be considered for publication.

HOW TO ENTER FOR FREE
Newsletter subscribers will be notified about the free submissions window ahead of time – just sign up at the link in bio (it’s free!) by February 3rd!

Everyone will be able to submit for free during the free submission period, but only newsletter subscribers will know in advance exactly when it will take place!

(Free submissions do not come with a 1-year subscription, and will be capped at 50 per genre.)
