Readymades of Duchamp and Loringhoven, on view at @visitpham

Seeing these pieces in person brought me back to my very first art history course in high school, where I learned about this 20th century urinal that changed the meaning of art forever. “Fountain,” was first declared as art in 1917, perhaps thanks to its photographic debut by Alfred Stieglitz. It was also just as quickly declared as mockery and garbage.

Of all the works on view I had only seen Duchamp’s “Bicycle Wheel” at the MoMa a few years back, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it again, on loan here for the show. Not included in these photos were a large collection of his cubist paintings, which were quite impressive too.

In 2015, Art Historian Glyn Thompson proved that Fountain should be attributed to German-born artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, who had been living in Philadelphia at the time of it’s inception, a city which Duchamp did not frequent. Using letters between Elsa’s sister Susan and Marcel, this theory can be confirmed. Interestingly, the Philadelphia Museum did not credit Elsa, but persists with Marcel’s textbook history.

This was a bucket list artwork for me to see, so I hope that a few of my fellow art history nerds enjoy these pictures. :)

Very big thank you to Misha for being one of my realest, most-creative friends. Straight nasty illustration skills. His sketchbook is a trip to the museum of lived and imagined experiences, you can find so much meaning to it all. Check the last slide for his insane sketches for a tattoo.

Enjoy these photos. Have a lovely evening.

📍Dia Bridgehampton, aka the Dan Flavin Art Institute

This gallery was straight up adorable. It was a small and sweet building that you’d almost miss if not for Flavin’s iconic light work on the exterior.

The first slide of the post is a temporary installation done by Liliana Porter. Titled, “The Task” (2024), it is a miniature landscape of knickknacks and do-dads that placed together creates an intriguing reality of strange laborious situations. 1 inch tall women frozen in time sweeping up large amounts of glitter and miniature army men storming in a land devoid of any real threat. The plane is littered with broken gears, ceramic shards, and vintage doll house pieces.

The second slide is a continuation of Porter’s landscape, growing into a life size set. It is still a strange disarray of objects, with ropes leading to a chair propped up by magazines. The chair is completely intertwined with an ode to Dan Flavin, the artist whose permanent installation is on the second floor. Using his decommissioned light works Porter had successfully added a strong touch of energy into her otherwise stationary piece. Can you tell I really loved her piece…? Sooo detailed and surreal.

The following slides are all artworks done by Dan Flavin. His style is extremely concrete and consistent. Abstract and geometric light sculptures were stationed in sections leading you around the second floor. Different arrangements of the light beams evoke different emotions and associations, supported by color theory. These pieces are very large, bright, and bold. Despite how simple the material range was, the effect was there. I had a wonderful time admiring the glows onto the room and myself, so captivating! Great photo-op spot for visitors to the area too.

+2 iPhone shots for some more detail :)

Overall this gallery was well worth the drive + free admission!! Totally recommend to anyone visiting the east end of LI.
