“Perhaps you are haunting me. What a comforting thought.”

The Ginger: It’s been months since I’ve posted but I’ve definitely been baking! Going to ease back into the content of it all and thought I’d start this autumn with a seasonal favorite (with a mapley twist) and one of my absolute favorite ghost stories. Gallant is an annual fall read. It’s gothic fantasy fiction at its finest. So haunting, so surreal, so mesmerizing. I can’t recommend this book enough for spooky season. And my god, these cookies… the only reason I regret making them is because of how easy it is to eat five in a row and still want more.

If you have any top tier autumn book recs, please share!!

“You are in all of my happiest places.”

The Ginger: I’ve been SO busy and haven’t posted the last few things I’ve baked (cinnamon rolls, a fairy cake, a chocolate cake, blueberry lemon cookies) and it’s bummed me out. BUT I finally managed to get these strawberry lemon bars the photoshoot they deserve paired with one of the sweetest books I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. A perfect summer combination.

And my people have been trying hard to convince me to love the fresh fruit in pastries by special requesting these baked goods, and I have to say, it’s working. Baking changes you 😘

“There were rules among friends, commandments, really, and the most important one was Thou Shalt Not Lust After Thy Friend’s Sister.”

The Ginger: I thought after reading this I’d know if I preferred the book or the show over the other, but I can’t decide. The book has the banter and fills out the storyline and the characters in a more gratifying way (and fueled my hatred for Simon’s father), while the show has the style, and the music, and the balls and glamor and the queen and her diamonds. I imagined the show often while reading the book, which made the book that much better. And the audible narrator sounds like Whistledown, which is superb for immersive reading.

And I made some more strawberry cookies for summer, this time sprinkled in edible glitter rather than a glaze. Look at me, making a cookie without a glaze. 😏

“This was the key to flourishing in graduate school. You could do anything if you were delusional.”

The Ginger: Like I said, hell is a TREK. And a sandy, twisted, crushing campus. This was my first Kuang book and all I can say is her writing is addicting. Even when this book got a little slow and a bit repetitive, I kept getting pulled back into this world of magic and the way she sees it. While it’s not my favorite depiction of hell, this book makes you appreciate just simply being alive and enjoying it while you can, especially after experiencing grad programs that feel like hell. And the last two chapters were *chefs kiss*

For baking, I tried my hand at some pull apart bread and totally overcooked it, although the dough was beautiful. It was as dry as the desert in Katabasis, but the boys in my house still enjoyed it. Next time I’ll have a better recipe (because it was obviously the recipes fault).

“Find what you love and let it kill you.”

The Ginger: This was a wild, twisted book that kept me on the edge of my seat, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want more Verity! She was like a myth, or this mysterious, unstoppable force that stole every scene. The story itself hooks you (even though I can’t relate to Lowen’s decision-making even a little), and that letter… 👀 I won’t spoil it, but damn.

But also, let’s be real, what writer would only read one chapter of a manuscript at a time… That may have been the craziest part of this whole book.

And for one of the trickiest books, I made a very tricky dessert (per special request by my husband). Multiple techniques all going on at once, from the batter to the brown butter to the frosting to the soak, but it was well worth the work. 🤌

“It’s a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you.”

The Ginger: There are only 3 books I’ve read in my entire life that have moved me to the point of ugly crying, and this is one of them. Painful and beautiful and so damn heartbreaking, it holds a special spot on my shelf. You know a writer is good when they can rip you to pieces and put you back together in 313 pages.

And in the baking world, I’m finally getting the confidence to put together my own recipes, and this one went splendidly! Progress ✨

“Amaze, amaze, amaze!”

The Ginger: Five stars. A masterpiece. No notes. Andy Weir is out of this world (pun-intended). And @the.ray.porter, thank you for being the voice of Grace, of Stratt, of Rocky, and of everyone else in this universe. You made this book that much more enjoyable. Also, big thanks to my 2 year old for letting me use your space toys. 🚀

These little cookie-wrapped-mini-reese’s cups dipped in red icing and edible glitter reminded me of astrophage. Save Earth. Save Erid. That is good plan, question?

“My name is Celaena Sardothien. But it makes no difference if my name’s Celaena or Lillian or Bitch, because I’d still beat you, no matter what you call me.”

The Ginger: A spectacular dessert for a renowned book. I am fully sat for both. One thing I love about Maas is the way she blends opposing ideas - violence and beauty, kindness and cruelty, danger and comfort, and everything in between. I have a feeling I’m going to look back at the end of the series and wish I could read it again for the first time.

And about the pastry… this might possibly be the best cake I’ve made to date, baking and taste-wise. I used to be a brat who never mixed or ordered fruit in my cakes, and I’m now mature enough to realize what a fool I have been. This blackberry dream was a masterpiece. And I’m getting really good at being able to just whip up a new recipe on a whim, which is giving me extra brownie points at home (pun intended).

“What a shame to be so angered by what you don’t have that you treat what you do have like it’s nothing.”

The Ginger: This book. You guys. Say what you want about the show, but this book was twisted and dark and demented and addicting af. Creepy, yes. But thrilling and littered with some of the most fantastic quotes? Also yes.

And a friendly reminder to please, please, please always have workable curtains on your windows.

For the pastry, I really just wanted to be able to eat some cupcakes for breakfast this week. These were probably the ugliest cupcakes I’ve ever made. Thank god for icing 🫠

“I have never met someone who is so perfectly my favorite person.”

The Ginger: I’m on a cookie kick right now, for those tuning in. But my god, these were divine. I loved the process of simmering fresh strawberries for the glaze. Definitely not helping with the summer body, but my taste buds are very happy.

And Beach Read was my first Emily Henry novel. I definitely wasn’t expecting lake house from the cover, but the storyline was cute and the romance burned hot and I became invested in the outcome quick. I’m excited for the movie and got a few more of her books lined up to tie me over.

“We don’t have to fall into the same category to be of equal value.”

The Ginger: I am so glad my book club recommended these books. It’s a cozy springtime fever dream about a restless tea monk and a curious robot and finding purpose, and I think I’ll be reading it annually. Short and sweet and whimsical, I was surprised at how much of an impact it made in such few pages. A Hugo prize well deserved 👏

The cookies were a different kind of sweet than I normally make, but SO good. A recipe from a friend, who was absolutely right: these are the perfect springtime cookies. Thank you for the recipe @l.o.hutchens 🫶 There will definitely be more batches in the future.

The Ginger: The vibe is so spring, but the pastry is so autumn.

My thoughts are all over the place with this book. A chaotic, unfaithful mess, but the author definitely commits and I liked her cadence. There was something about the book that made me keep coming back. Like a train wreck I HAD to know the conclusion to. Albeit, I read this years and years ago (after watching the movie). Also, I didn’t know this book had a sequel until today. Anyone read it? Does the story get any less unhinged?

Bakery-wise, I’ve come to the conclusion that every cookie needs a glaze. All of them. Every one.
