A very special weekend I never got around to sharing spent in beautiful Northern Wisconsin. Dad and I attended Eaux Claires while mom scoured the area’s thrifts and antique malls for vintage linens, fabrics, and anything that could comprise a garment, more on that front soon. She’s cooking. Seeing an artist in Justin Vernon who has played a part in my life for longer than he hasn’t be Bob Dylan for an evening was something I revel in. Dijon, Fred Again, Aaron Dessner, Aimee Mann, Samia, Bizhiki are also sacred. I hold memories like these closely and I don’t think it resonates just how special it was until some time had passed. Hence me sitting here “curating” a dump a month later, just don’t want to forget that feeling.

40 sum odd miles through the Sierra Nevadas on the Rae Lakes Loop in Kings Canyon National Park with my dear companion @curtis_guy_taylor. Something happened out there … stay until the end for video evidence answering an age old question. 🚶‍♂️ taken in Rae Lakes Loop, Kings Canyon National Park by @gingynickels

Extra Extra!

Some of you might know I run a page called @broken.backboard , here I document old hoops I find around the place — predominantly in Indiana. This page is about sport, basketball, a love for hoops, Indiana, and an admiration for the weathered. It is my objective to show the life that persists in these hoops time has worn. I’d like to think these old hoops might resonate with something you played on growing up.

For five months now I have been sober, and this summer I started walking regularly, searching for hoops. Finding peace in life’s simple offerings, it is gratifying and in this — these backboards kept me curious. Kept me aligned with this goal. I found that I enjoy life like this far more than I miss life like that. I’m very proud of this, I understand it’s not that easy for some folks. In that way, Broken Backboard feels like more than a project. It’s something physical, something that can become whatever I want it to be. That’s freeing and all the fuel I need to keep threading this needle. Today I am grateful and tomorrow I will be too.

Special thanks to @laceymfarrow for her help shooting the product, and @carsonbrooks for his help getting the tees and caps made. I appreciate you both very much, it’s not lost on me. taken in Indianapolis, Indiana by @gingynickels
