🕊️ Honouring the Life and Legacy of The Right Reverend Christopher Ssenyonjo (1931–2026)

Today, we honour the life of a faith leader who chose love over fear, compassion over prejudice, and justice over silence.

Bishop Christopher Ssenyonjo was a courageous advocate for the dignity and human rights of LGBT+ people in Uganda and beyond. Even after losing his pension, being barred from ministry, and facing rejection from the institution he had faithfully served, he remained unwavering in his belief that faith should never be used to justify discrimination.
“One doesn’t need to be converted first to another sexuality to be loved by God.”
Through Integrity Uganda and the St. Paul’s Reconciliation and Equality Centre (SPREC), he created spaces of refuge, hope, and belonging for those who had been rejected by their families, churches, and communities.
His legacy reminds us that faith can be a force for inclusion, healing, and justice. At a time when misinformation and hatred sought to divide, Bishop Ssenyonjo stood firmly for the inherent dignity of every human being.
As we mourn his passing, we also recommit ourselves to the work he so courageously championed: building safer communities, defending human rights, and ensuring that everyone can live with dignity, equality, and love.
Rest in power, Bishop Christopher Ssenyonjo. Your courage, compassion, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire generations around the world.

GIN-SSOGIE condemns all forms of xenophobic violence, hate speech, and vigilantism targeting migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and foreign nationals. Human dignity does not stop at a border.
We stand with all those affected, especially LGBTI migrants who often face multiple forms of discrimination and violence.
Africa’s future will not be secured by exclusion, but by solidarity, justice, and our shared humanity.
An attack on one African diminishes the dignity of all Africans.

Religion is not the problem. The misuse of religion is.
At the 62nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council, GIN-SSOGIE joined diplomats, faith leaders, UN experts, and civil society representatives to explore how faith, gender equality, and human rights can stand side by side.

The discussion reaffirmed that faith and human rights are not opposing forces. Religious traditions contain powerful resources for dignity, justice, inclusion, and equality.

Advancing gender equality requires collaboration among governments, faith communities, civil society, and international institutions. It also requires challenging harmful narratives that use religion, culture, or tradition to justify discrimination.

As the Amazigh proverb reminds us:
“A house does not stand on one pillar.”
Neither does justice.
Together, we continue building bridges between faith and human rights, promoting dialogue, and advancing a more just and inclusive world for all.

Call for Sign-On: Community Consultation on Proposed UNHRC Decriminalisation Resolution

While decriminalisation remains an essential human rights objective that many of us have worked toward for decades, concerns have been raised by organisations and activists from criminalising contexts regarding the timing, process, strategy, and potential consequences of the proposed initiative.

As outlined in the attached statement, briefing note and FAQ, there are strong arguments for pausing and broadening consultations before any resolution moves forward. Many of those most likely to be affected by the outcome have not yet had a meaningful opportunity to participate in discussions about whether such a resolution is the most effective and safest path at this moment.

This sign-on initiative is intended for civil society organisations, networks, movements, community groups, faith-based organisations, and human rights organisations working in countries where consensual same-sex relations remain criminalised.

It is important to stress that:
Signing this letter does not indicate opposition to decriminalisation.
Decriminalisation remains a fundamental human rights obligation and a critical advocacy priority.
Signing reflects support for decriminalisation that is community-led, context-sensitive, strategically informed, and guided by the principles of “nothing about us without us” and “first, do no harm.”
The letter calls for greater consultation, stronger movement-wide engagement, and a more coordinated approach before any new Human Rights Council resolution is introduced.

We invite organisations that share these concerns to review the materials and consider endorsing the letter. by @ginssogie
