Finally finished this series (I had read book 1 back in 2019) and what a fun time!! I love the Bastards and their little rituals and schemes!

The Gentleman Bastards are a group of thieves, led by Locke Lamora, who follow the mandates of their god, the Crooked Warden, and go around cheating aristocrats out of their money. (#eattherich)

We follow them in their adult lives, but get flashbacks from their craaazy rough childhoods with their harsh and hilarious mentor, Father Chains. From a young age, they learned to move through the world with all their senses on high alert, ready to do anything — and become anyone — at any given moment in order to survive.

At the beginning of the series when we’re introduced to Locke it’s easy to buy into in the rumours that circulate about him. There are whisperings of an almost mystical figure, the Thorn of Camorr: a shadow, unafraid of danger, coming up with elaborate schemes and getting away with it every time. And then the story progresses and you’re like: wait,,,that’s our guy Locke ??? Don’t get me wrong the man’s good at his job, but he’s just as flawed as anyone else. When your whole life is a charade, you’ve gotta slip up eventually, right??

But guess what!!! His bestie Jean loves him despite all his bullshit. Locke and Jean’s friendship is so refreshing. Two men who genuinely care about and confide in each other??? MORE OF THIS (in real life too pls)! They each experience the other at their worst, and still admire and depend on each other. They definitely take turns being a crutch, and giving pep talks (mostly Jean to Locke when he’s wallowing in self pity). Hey, what are friends for! :’) Locke and Jean forever!! <3

The world is rich, the religion is intriguing af, the dialogue is some of the best I’ve read, the humour is wild… and I even liked the sprinkles of romance! Scott Lynch please write more (only if u want to tho!!! authors don’t owe us shit) ❤️ by @giordreads

I thought it was about time I tried reading Les Mis, which has been on my tbr since like 2013 lol. It is quiiiiite long and intimidating, so to help me along I’ve started listening to this podcast called “The Les Mis Reading Companion” by Professor Briana Lewis, which has been super enjoyable and insightful!!

So far I’ve read the preface and the first 9 chapters (they’re very short - I am only 3% in) and listened to the corresponding 2 episodes. Episode 1 goes over the novel’s preface and some historical context, and then episode 2 discusses how Hugo uses the Bishop — this exceptionally generous and hospitable character — to illustrate his belief that Christian values are in alignment with social justice principles.

🏠🧪 The House on the Strand is the last book Du Maurier wrote (and the first of hers i’ve read), and is a fun mix of psychological gothic, sci fi, and hist fic!!! I read this back in the fall and had literally so much fun.

The story follows Dick, a middle aged guy who is in a transitional moment in his life, conflicted about where he wants to settle with his wife and two stepsons. He rents a home in Cornwall from an old friend of his, Professor Lane. While waiting for his family to join him on vacation, Dick passes the time doing drugs! But not just any drug!! Good ole Professor Lane left him a MAGICAL DRUG that causes him to TAKE TRIPS BACK TO THE 14TH CENTURY! NO BIG DEAL!

Being unhappy and uncertain about his real life, Dick becomes invested in the past and the lives of those he encounters there. Whenever he wants to escape the stress of reality he can take a dose of the drug and go for a fun little trip, be a passive observer of other people’s medieval draaaaama, and still be home in time for supper! What could go wrong??? Well, apparently a lot! Because our minds aren’t made to juggle two timelines at once…

This was SO SO good. Please read it if you like escapism (and its consequences) & little english towns with deep history!!

I had SUCH A FUN experience reading Project Hail Mary with my bestie!! 🚀🌟 A couple of weeks ago Jon was like “you should totally read this book it’s my favourite and the movie is coming out” so I did (audiobook) and he reread with me!!

I never really read sci fi because it overwhelms me, but the science in PHM was sooo digestible and I was able to follow. I loved listening to Ryland’s internal monologue as he problem solved — it was a nice balance between humorous and logical! Honestly the characters were all so funny, Rocky was so freaking cute, and the ending was PERFECT in my opinion. All around super duper enjoyable read, especially thanks to the audiobook and the buddy read!!!!

AND THEN! On Monday Jon and I went to an advance screening of the movie and they handed out these cutie AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE pins!!!! The movie was really good too— obviously as with any adaptation there are things missing, and things happening more quickly made me feel like the stakes weren’t as high. But nonetheless so good!!! Some fun new jokes! Also I liked the soundtrack! There was only one scene I didn’t like that made me sooo uncomfortable for no reason LOL. It did not happen in the book but if you’ve seen the movie: sign of the times 🎤😩

The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole is widely considered to be the first gothic novel. I read it as a part of a course I am auditing from Signum University called The Gothic Tradition 🖤 oooo !

I was surprised to find it quick and easy to get through. It was super fun to see the use of tropes that would become staples in the gothic literary tradition.
Walpole really said: we should write whatever tf we want! Who cares if it doesn’t make sense!
An old castle, a giant dismembered knight, secret passageways, corrupt and power hungry men, young girls seeking sanctuary from those men, hidden identities, ancestral curses, death, romance, melancholy…. and an overhanging sense of hopelessness…PERFECT! by @giordreads
