Par 2/3 …… The Baló English Medium school is located in Howrah immediately outside of Kolkata, and serves 420 kids and young boys and girls from the slum of Pilkana. One of the very poor place of the world where thousands of families and kids live their entire life with joy and dignity despite the un-imaginable number of challenges they face every single day. Human spoiled minds like mine remain always astonished by the joy of those students and the level of awareness, confidence, determination, ambition and preparation they are able to develop and achieve along their journey at Baló that goes from the kindergarden to level12.….. 3/3 …… The answer to my surprise is easy and immediately visible when you are there in person, it is all about the leadership of the project defined by unconditional dedication and open heart, and the staff of teachers and workers which the motivation is endless and profound, and the fact they all share true care for the kids, their families and the most vulnerable people in the community of Pilkana.

Here we are again! On my way back from Kolkata at Baló English Medium School with the usual mixed feeling, and a piece of heart left there to wait for me next year.
With more volunteers than usual being there in those days, the week has been intense but full of joy and truly enriching for me as usual.
Together with my daughter, who joined us in Kolkata for the first time, we recorded some short video clips and interviews to students and teachers. What a chances to fall even more in love with the Baló project that has something truly special and unique……. (Cont…) by @giotashina

I may need to wait another year before I go back.

I just wrapped up my annual week in Howrah (Kolkata) at Baló Medium School and the feeling is always mixed. While on one side the chaos, noise, smell, poverty, smog, decadence and traffic of Kolkata and Howrah make me looking for some more familiar views at home, on the other side, the togetherness and joy of emotions I experience when there, calls me to stay longer.

Baló welcomes everyday around 375 students from the nursery to Level12. They are among the very poor of the poorest of this world but you would never say that when in the school. Soon it will be time of new year admissions and this means that the next time I’ll be there, they will be at least 400.

Baló is not just a free school of very good level where student gets chances to study, at Baló students find true care, a good meal everyday and continuous support for their growth and for their families.
They find a staff lead by a superwoman that truly cares about them and their future.

In the environment where those families live, it may be that Baló is the only place where kids find true care and support. Because when you fight hard every single day to find the few rupies needed to buy some rice or few potatoes, also parenting becomes a luxury, sometimes an impossible luxury.

But kids are the same everywhere, they look for someone taking care of them, they deserve love, care and opportunities, they need support to grow up, they need hugs, they need to be heard, seen and fed.

The way to become an adult aware of who you are and at best, able to master your destiny is way harder here than in most of the other places of the western world and not only, and I’m very truly grateful to the Baló staff that enter the school everymorning with joy, ready to watch and hear and provide support to every single child.

L' Emilia Romagna è quel pezzo di terra voluto da Dio per permettere agli uomini di costruire la Ferrari. Gli Emiliani-Romagnoli sono così.
Devono fare una macchina? Loro ti fanno una Ferrari, una Maserati e una Lamborghini.
Devono fare una moto? Loro costruiscono una Ducati.
Devono fare un formaggio? Loro si inventano il Parmigiano Reggiano.
Devono fare due spaghetti? Loro mettono in piedi la Barilla.
Devono farti un caffè? Loro ti fanno la Saeco.
Devono trovare qualcuno che scriva canzonette? Loro ti fanno nascere gente come Dalla, Morandi, Vasco, Liga, Zucchero, Laura Pausini, Cremonini e tanti altri...
Devono farti una siringa? Loro ti tirano su un'azienda biomedicale.
Devono fare 4 piastrelle? Loro se ne escono con delle maioliche.
Sono come i giapponesi, non si fermano, non si stancano, e se devono fare una cosa, a loro piace farla bene e bella, ed utile a tutti..
Ci saranno pietre da raccogliere dopo un terremoto? Loro alla fine faranno cattedrali."
